Cancun Safety

We are planning a trip to Cancun for the summer. I am aware of all the warnings about Cancun; however, I was wondering about the safety of the airports and transportation. Has anyone visited Cancun recently?

Our local news is doing a series on Mexico. Tonight's was on Cancun; they showed a heavy, heavy police presence. Lots of police cars patrolling. The tourists looked like they were having a great time. There was another post on this in the last couple of days if you want to search for it. It had a number of responses.

We returned from Tulum/ Cancun on March 7th. I never noticed anything "alarming" in the least.

We felt safe, never uneasy etc.

This unrest is about Mexican politics, drug cartels, and located in very specific areas.

It has nothing to do with tourists and is nowhere near Cancun.

It has nothing to do with tourists and is nowhere near Cancun.

Well, that's half true. It generally doesn't involved tourists, but a top police official in Cancun was recently assassinated by drug gangs.

All of that said, Cancun is perfectly safe. The Hotel Zone is cut off from the rest of Cancun, and even if you go into town, you are likely going to be perfectly fine and the risk is no higher than touring Miami or LA or Hawaii.

Cancun is also about as Mexican and exciting as visiting Miami, particularly if you just see the hotel zone.

Are hurricanes, or extreme weather, a concern in July for Cancun?

We just got back from Puerto Morelos on March 9th with several trips into Cancun. We have a home there and go down quite a bit. I didn't notice any greater police presence or any thing out of the ordinary. We also went into Playa del Carmen and I made a solo bus trip into down town Cancun.

I think it would be very unusual to have a hurricane in July. A couple years ago Hurricane Dean hit in August and that was considered quite early in the season.

July might be rainy, but it's not really considered hurrican season yet, that's a bit later like Aug/Sept.

For those of you who have actually stayed with children in the Cancun area, what resorts would you highly recommend? What activities would you recommend? My wife and I are in good health, the kids are (will be) 9 and 12 at the time of travel. thanks.

I just recently went to cancun for a college spring break trip. I felt really safe around our resort, but once we went out into the town you could feel tension in the air. I have been to cancun 6 or more times in my life and I have never seen so many police or ambulances there before. It might just have been because of it being spring break, but there were several rumors about rapes and killings and people being mugged. We also saw a lot of really ritzy looking cars being pulled over by the police.

Cancun is my favorite place to go. You just have to be smart and know where you are and know what you are doing at all times, you can't be stupid The people at the resort want to make you feel safe. They kept asking us if we felt safe and comfortable there. They know that all of this violence and everything is hurting their business.

All in all Cancun is a great place to go.

Others on here are right. Most of the drug cartel violence is located in the border towns like Juarez. I would definitely avoid those places. However, many other places like Cancun do not have the problem so are ok to go. Anyway, don't worry. Due to our government's(both democrat and republican) failure to control our borders, you don't have to go to mexico for mexican drug cartels and gangs, there now in many major american cities.
