Cancun Beaches -- new sand? Are Playa del Carmen's different, too?

I read in our newspaper that after Cancun's east-facing beaches washed away with Hurricane Wilma, a Dutch company was hired to rebuild them. However, the new sand was pumped from the bottom of the ocean and is full of shell fragments and is not the soft, white sand. Has anyone been there recently who can comment?

How are Playa del Carmen's beaches?
