Not certain of the exact location of Secrets--believe its just north of Playa del Carmen. Depending on what you want to spend, you can either go by taxi or van--or take the Riviera bus to Playa (hourly) from the Cancun airport.
These are excellent first class buses at about $7.00 US.
I know of no airline currently not including the Mexican departure tax in the price of your ticket. That was done in the past but is pretty much now a thing of the past.

Departure tax is always included in your ticket, unless perhaps it was a specially hand-printed and issued ticket of the old carbon copy type, or you are an infant traveling for free without a seat, or some other such very unusual case.

Recently heard of a new scam, however, in which time-share people tell naive visitors that they can sign off on their ticket and get their departure tax waived if the visitor goes through the time-share rigmarole with them. Good one, that!

We took Cancun Valet from the airport to our hotel (Royal Hideaway).

Highly recommend them. Worth the money.

Ditto the advice on Cancun Valet. Great service for the money - especially first timers to the area. We used them last year when we went to Isla Mujeres. This year we'll be going to Playa del Carmen and we're going to try the bus.

As to the departure tax, work for an airline and know of no one charging a departure tax. Not sure what Ryberg is referring to in regards to the "old carbon copy" type of ticket.
And, I agree that Cancun Valet is a good choice if not trying to save money. Now that I am accustomed to the bus, I actually prefer it over the vans. All a matter of personal choice--and finances.

You can check out their website. We paid $115 round trip. They are waiting for you (with a sign with your name) as you exit customs (ignore all the people yelling at you trying to get you to come over to their booths, even if they say they need to look at your "papers')
While I'm sure it was more expensive than a bus, Cancun Valet takes your party only (no waiting to leave) directly to your destination (no waiting while others get dropped off). They picked us up at our hotel and drove us directly to the airport - thereby letting us stay at the hotel until the last minute.
I've also heard they'll stop somewhere on the way for Coronas (or maybe it's that they'll have them waiting in the van for you).

Enjoy your trip.

The bus will cost about $7 US per person each way--and the taxi to your hotel will be in the $5 range. As I said, its a matter of choice based on the time you have--and how much you want to spend on transportation. (the difference buys me a lot of good Mexican beer--but not Corona)
Both are good options.

" Not sure what Ryberg is referring to in regards to the "old carbon copy" type of ticket."

Well, just that: the old-style airline ticket that's written by hand or perhaps typed using carbon copies (it was always red on those tickets), as opposed to the modern tickets that are computer printed on card-like paper without carbon to make the copies. The old ones as a result were always much flimsier than the modern ones, and could be much messier, too.

They have their parallel in the old-style carbon copy forms used to charge credit cards with the sliding imprint machine, and I believe in similar fashion, are still used today in some unusual circumstances and/or in less technologically developed environments. We got one such ticket maybe 3 years or so ago, I believe through an agent who was fulfilling a role as representative for an airline in a situation where we were exchanging a ticket that had officially expired but was being honored or something like that. Or maybe we were making a change to the ticket or getting a special infant ticket or some such thing. Anyway, in that situation they specifically warned us that extras such as departure tax normally included were not going to be, because of this way of hand-issuing the ticket or because it came through that representative or something, and sure enough, we had to pay the departure tax in person at the airport upon check-in that time.

That's all!

Thanks for the explanation. I do remember the old carbon copy tickets and do still see them at times--just hadn't seen them with an airline in years. (we probably do still have the old manual validator around, though!)
Thanks again!
