Cancun - Antigua/Panajachel

Jump to last reply

Can anyone advise on the best way of getting from Cancun to Panajachel. Direct flights seem very expensive. Is there a cheaper way i.e. bus part of the route, then fly?

Thanks

No doubt you will find loads more information in Cancun itself but I'll tell you what I did and I guess it turned out no less expensive.

I bussed it from Cancun through to Merida and Campeche. Stayed in Campeche. Bussed from Campeche to Palenque. Spent some days in Palenque. Now, in Palenque there were loads of operators who could get you over the border into Guatemala and I doubt you would ever find information about them on the web.

So bus to Belampak? towards the border. Get onto a boat with a palapa roof and mexican army searching our boats for about 30 seconds swinging M-16s around. Don't know why they were searching a boat leaving Mexico but it was comical to see all the peoples heads duck as the guards turned around with their guns. At guatamalteco immigration we had to wait for them to finish a charity football match before they would look at our passports. Then a bus onto Flores which punctured a tyre and everybody helped to jack up.

So if you can rough it I don't guarantee it will be cheaper but you will find operators and you will have one strange time.
