I asked the same question a couple of weeks ago, as Im planning on going (1st time) in late Jan, here's the only response I got: PS: I'm still going!)

Author: Leila ([email protected])
Date: 10/26/2000, 6:17 pm ET

Message: In a recent New York Times Travel article, it was written that Rio is having a problem w/ pollution such as raw sewage, and bacteria that breed from it on the beaches due to run off from shanty towns above it and breaks in sewage lines.

Is this a constant problem? Is the ocean swimmable there? Planning a Jan. trip and would hate to find out the hard way. Hoping it was just an isolated incident!
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Author: Erin ([email protected])
Date: 10/30/2000, 8:22 am ET

Message: Yes, Rio's beaches are polluted and have been from some time (years). Although there is a clean up attempt underway, it will take years to resolve.

You have to take it day by day, some days are fine to go in the water, other days are not. A tip that was given to me is that if the locals are in the water, it's probabaly a good day. If you see only tourists in the water, then the water is probably not safe. If you don't go into the water, you are not missing much. It's the Atlantic ocean, so the water can be very cold (even in summer) and there is a vicious undertow. Enjoy your trip!
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi,
I've been to Rio twice (last time 8 months ago) and both times went for swims in the ocean (at Pepino and Ipanema beaches). Even if you don't get in the water, still hang out at the beach...it's great to watch the Brazilians socializing on the beach. Good luck and enjoy...Rio is awesome and highly addictive. You will want to keep going back!

Hi,
Yes Rios beaches is not as clean as it is northeast of Brazil, but yes you could swim (dont leave your things / valuable to the beach). The best is to read from local newspaper and see which beaches are good , thay have each day propia or inpropia notes.

The level of pollution in each beach of city of Rio de Janeiro is availble from Internet... and daily published in any newspaper in Rio.
Whenthe water is clean, I go to "Posto seis", a location at the right of Copacabana beach and usually exempt of waves imparing swimming.

My opinion after 45 years swimming and diving in Rio de Janeiro ...
Antonio
