Cabo to San Miguel de Allende

We are planning to travel to Cabo this February. I would like to add another week andwas thinking of San Miguel de Allende. I am not seeing an easy way to do that. It looks like we would fly in to Leon or Querataro and then shuttle for 1.5 hours to SMA. Most flights are very long for a fairly short distance. Am I missing something? Another thought was to do the Copper Canyon Train.
Thoughts on realistcally doing either of these add on would be appreciated.

Yes that's right. And the flights all go thru Mexico City; there aren't any nonstops between Cabo and Leon.

You've just picked two places that don't have great transportation options and aren't really anywhere near each other!

There are certainly other ways but they'd take forever, like a bus to La Paz, onto a ferry from La Paz over to Mazatlan, then a bus or car rental from there.

Are you sure you couldn't be happy adding your second week somewhere else right on the Baja peninsula? Todos Santos, La Paz, the wine region of Valle de Guadalupe? Loreto?

That would sure be easier and maximize your vacation time.

You could easily take a bus over to La Paz, it's on the Sea of Cortez side of the peninsula. Here's a cute hotel I stayed at there: https://clubelmoro.com.mx/en
La Paz offers lots of outdoorsy stuff like sea kayaking and camping, visting islands, snorkeling and diving, etc. Plus has an interesting downtown area, Malecon, easily worth visiting for a few days.

Lots of people rent cars on the Baja. It's a huge, flat, desert peninsula. The driving is not difficult. I've never done it myself to advise specifically but plenty of people do.

Todos Santos is ~an hour or so north from Cabo. Known as a surf town.

Put the words "tours for valle de guadalupe" in a Google search and loads of options pop up. I've no experience personally but people seem to love this region on the Baja.

I'm not saying any of these ideas are better than trying to go to San Miguel De Allende... I'm just saying they're a LOT closer so would be easier to combine w/ Cabo!

I cannot give any info for SMA or Copper Canyon. However, Valle de Guadalupe is not handy unless you fly to San Diego or Tijuana and the drive. It is closer to California than Cabo.

Todos Santos is very nice and laid back. Close to Los Cabos, But much smaller town. I have never stayed, but checked out this place, Posada La Paza and put it on our wish list:

February is prime whale season in Baja. Lagoons on the Pacific are prime breeding and birthing areas, as is the Sea of Cortez. Several years ago, we stayed in Loreto for 10 days and did a day trip to Magdalena Bay to see the baby whales. Such a fabulous experience! I would recommend you perhaps doing something like this if you have the inclination. Loreto is a 5-6 hour drive from Cabo. I think there are flights on certain days from Cabo. There are also flights to/from LAX on selected days on Alaska Airlines.

Here is a link to my trip report.

Thanks so much for all of your suggestions, keep them coming. I think we will do as you suggest, just add time to the Cabo area.

I think I will either choose Todos Santos, La Paz or San Jose del Cabo for our extra time

Include the East Cape area in your La Paz visit. Lovely beaches still relativity underdeveloped. La Paz is still one of my favorite Mexican cities.

Even though you've already decided, Aeromexico has a reasonably short flight, just under 5 hours.
Volaris as well but through TIJ, not MEX. But not short, some 9 hours.
