Would it easier/faster to go around Lake Arenal and down to the new bridge over the Rio Tempisque or to sort of back track towards San Jose and take the ferry from Puntarenas? I am having a hard time figuring it out from my map.
Thank you in advance for any help!

Three weeks in August 2011 - trip report

The most direct route over the Tempisque bridge is the best; while part of the road around the lake may be gravel, it is well travelled and easy to do. Just take it easy and give yourself plenty of time; roads in CR can be rough in spots and the main ones are well patrolled with speed traps! We did this drive years ago with no problem - I don't think things have changed too much except for the new bridge.
Thanks for the reply! I drove around Lake Arenal a few years ago to get to Tamarindo and it took forever to get on the ferry so I thought maybe the other way would be better. But it sounds like we will give the new bridge over Tempisque a shot.
Thanks again!
