The 10 places you mentioned above are part of the Yucatan Peninsula which consist of 3 states, Campeche, Yucatan and Quintana Roo. Merida and Chichen Itza are part of Yucatan. The remaining 8 are all part of Quintana Roo. There are no noticeable markers or borders between the 3 states and you are free to roam where ever and whenever you wish. The Mayan Riviera starts near the town of Puerto Morelos down south to Tulum. Cancun is not part of the Riviera Maya. Many small destinations such as Coba, Punta Allen and Puerto Felipe Carillo claim to be part of the Riviera so as to attract the tourist industry. I have been to all the areas you mentioned except for the underwater museum which is in Cancun. Your right about Cancun being a popular destination and I would strongly suggest you spend some time in Cancun to appreciate it's turquoise waters, white beaches, restaurants, shopping, museums, ruins, night life and so much more...
