Belize - what to do

Help !! We are going to Belize in Feb. to a wedding to be held at Caye Chapel resort. We, my husband and I, will be at this resort for five days. Once I fly that far, I'd like to see more of the area, but have not much idea of what is there other than snorkeling and diving. Jungle tours? Ruins? How far from Belize City and how do I pick up the tours to these? Should we rent a car? Other places to stay? Is it safe to stay in Belise City or are there other ideas? Any suggestions would be very appreciated !

Caye Chapel is very luxe, great diving, snorkeling, fishing and golf. Drive to the Cayo district, 1.5 hrs from Belize City, close to Maya sites, caves with artifacts, waterfalls, river and jungle trips, horses, culture and quaint lodges and spas.

Here's a link to our travelogue in case you're interested - we loved every place we stayed and everything we did in Belize:

Note that we're budget/rustic travelers by choice so most of our accommodations wouldn't hold up to Cahe Chapel. I agree with Katie that the San Ignacio area is a great 2nd base for exploring.

You should buy a guidebook! There are some good options out there. Belize is a very diverse, fascinating place and there's nothing like a good guidebook to whet your appetite, in my opinion. Belize has a strong internet presence and the national language is English so it's easy to get more information that way. Although it focuses lately more on social and expatriate issues, it has an excellent search engine and long history, so check out the Belize Forum, too.

Have a great trip, whatever you decide!

On turning up in Belize City, my first thought was to get a bus out again. The same with some other westerners on the bus. The town is poor and a little run down and a number of locals seemed to resent white tourists. It seemed safe enough in the day time but I would not go out at night if I stayed there.

Hi
We've been to Belize 3 different times. We put trip reports and pictures from all 3 on our website. We've been to Placencia, San Ignacio and Caye Caulker.
