Do you need to stay in the city? Taranova only gets so-so reviews.
You are 3 hours from Arenal and all the activities there, and 3 hours from the closest beach (and/or coastline).
You could make day trips to volcans Poas and Irazu, coffee plantations, and waterfalls (like La Paz waterfall gardens).
However, it seems an odd choice for a first visit (I'm assuming) to Costa Rica.
