Any recommendations for activities or adventures for kids in Riviera Maya

We will be traveling to soliman bay for 2 weeks with our children ages 3 and 5. Does anyone have suggestions for fun family activities or day trips? My kids love animals, hiking, easy snorkeling (for 5 year old) and of course great beaches. I was hoping to send my husband on a fishing trip with my 5 year old for a half day as well so any suggestions on reputable guides for that would be appreciated.

A 3 year old loves hiking? Do you carry the child on your back? Of course there are those eco-parks around there you might enjoy them (around Tulum), that have swimming and snorkeling. LIke Xel-ha and Xcaret. Xcaret might have more to do for your kids. info

My 3 year old is actually good for a couple mile hike. She keeps up fairly well too. Thanks for the link. I signed up for the Xcaret newsletter.

Lots to do in the area. For a smaller, less touristy, and very safe place to snorkel, Yakul lagoon at the north end of the Akumal road is nice spot. Here is a link to the monkey preserve
not too far from Coba:

Go snorkeling in Akumal and Yal-Ku.
You can rent pangas for $180 for up to 3 hours (plus tip) at either of the two dive shops or Cueva del Pescador restaurant, if you catch fish they will cook it for a small fee pp for the sides, plus drinks and tip.

Hi! I recommend you to take TULUM & XELHA Tour! You have a lot of options to do with this.. From here you will be taken to Xel-Ha a spectacular theme water park, unique at the Riviera Maya, where you will spend a day of adventure enjoying natural, ecological and aquatic attractions. You will explore inlets, coves, underground rivers called cenotes, mangroves and sail along the lazy river on inner tubes. Simply a paradise for those who enjoy snorkeling and diving in unique natural spots... I think you and your kids can enjoy this.. and its in a very good price.. you can see more information, pictures and a video about this tour here..

Thanks for all of the fantastic ideas. Anyone have more insight on guided fishing trips? I have heard that you can also hire a personal chef to come to your beach house to cook your fresh fish for you for about $50-75.00.....anyone heard of this?

Xel-ha and Xcaret are nowhere near Tulum, which is 45 min. south of those parks. Xel-ha and Xcaret are just outside of playa del Carmen! to the south! literally. 5 min. south be car or taxi.

Excuse me, I meant to say that Xcaret and XPlor parks are 5 min south of Playa del Carmen. Xel-ha is on the way to Tulum from Playa del. Carmen. I am not sure exactly what the mile marker on hwy 307 is for Xelha.

When we were researching our trip, these 2 guide outfits got rave reviews and have some interesting things on offer.

We ended up doing our own thing instead, so I can't personally recommend them, just think they're worth checking out. My photos with blog, travelogue, and review links on the main page of each collection are below in case you're interested - all my recommendations are embedded there.
Happy trails!

Be sure to check the age restrictions before they get their hopes up - I don't know about that because our daughter was in her late 20s when we took her the Jungle Place for her birthday.

We've been to the Mayan Riviera several times with our 3 kids. They loved Xelha and Xcaret. Our youngest was 4 the first time we went to Xelha and he had a great time. There is no need to take a tour, you can just use the public bus or a taxi and then you can come and go as you like. We also did Selvatica ziplining on that same trip and all my kids loved it. My youngest ziplined with either a guide or my husband depending upon the length of the zipline. They were awesome with kids. On our last trip we went to Akumal and Yal-Ku to go snorkeling. The beach in Akumal is really pretty with a lot of locals. Yal-ku was nice easy snorkeling for the kids. However, my kids favorite thing in Akumal was renting a golf cart. Right after you go through the arch into town there is a hotel. If you go into their lobby you can rent a golf cart for the day. I think it was $40 for a full day. You can drive it to Yal-ku and to the beach. There is a restaurant on the way to Yal-ku that is amazing. The views are just breathtaking. They have hammocks for the kids to play in, a treehouse, and a pool you can use. Food was good too. Kids can drive the golf carts & my kids LOVED that. Have a great trip!

Matkat1111, thank you so much for all of the information. I am taking note all your recommendations. I didn't realize how many options there really are to entertain the kids on this trip.

Does anyone have any experience with exploring Sian Ka'an? I found some information about it on locogringo.com. I read one report that said you have a good chance of seeing jaguars and howler monkeys if you go early in the day. It sounds like an amazing place for a day trip.

The are so many family activities to do in Riviera Maya. We always recommend the parks (Xcaret, Xel-Ha, Xplore and Xochimilco) as well as visiting the Mayan communities.

The Biosphere of Siaan Ka'an is also a great place to visit, as it is a virgin area, with blue fresh water and you will be able to see some amazing nature as well as float around natural canals.
