any nice places to stay near La Paz / Poas Volcano

I want to stay near the Poaz Volcano / La Paz Waterfall so I can see the crater nice and early...any recommendations of where to stay on the moderately priced side?

I know Peace Lodge is recommended but too expensive for me.

My first thought was you are only an hour away if you stay near SJ.

But then the more I thought, I too wanted to know - So your question - made me consult my guide book!

Since we had previously stayed at Peace Lodge, I had never considered this!

I found one listed with a website called Poas Volcano Lodge, looks pretty good - Anyone know about this place? www.poasvolcanolodge.com

Do a search on this board. As I mentioned to someone else on another thread, several months ago a poster gave good reviews to a small hotel near Poas. This could be it.

OK, I'll check the board and report back - I know it is only 1 hour from SJ, but i'm not a morning person, and getting to the crater by 8am is already going to be hell as it is without having to travel for 1 hour!

You should be okay getting there by 9:00. Porbably even later--chances do decrease as the morning goes, however. Once in a great while, one can get lucky for a brief moment or two in the p.m.

Both times I've been there in the PM and we had great views, although we did have to be patient and wait for the clouds to clear. 10 mins on and 10 mins off.
Just a note, bring a sweater or jacket!

I checked the site and the name of the little place someone raved about IS Poas Volcano Lodge...I'm a little surprised because it is only ranked 2 stars and will still cost me about $115 canadian per night...but I will check it out probably.

How was the hotel? I’m searching for something close but not 300+ per night. Additionally I’m going with my step father and want my own bed. Peace seems to be a couples retreat.

Bonnie - this thread is from 2005, so you probably won't get an answer from the OP. Two lodges that are very close to Poas:

Poas Lodge http://www.poaslodge.com/
Poas Volcano Lodge http://www.poasvolcanolodge.com/about_the_lodge.html

About 20 miles:
Pura Vida Hotel http://www.puravidahotel.com/
