Any feedback on Cala Luna Villas Tamarindo in Costa Rica?

We are considering it for a family vacation in March with our 9 and 12 year old sons. Can anyone comment on the villas, restaurants, location and surrounding area? Also, what are the options for transportation from SJO airport in terms of cost and travel time? Thanks so much for your help! Cheri

Do a test search for Cala Luna. There were a few posts but differing views.

We are considering having our October '02 wedding at Cala Luna and so far the staff has been extremely helpful, but I've also had a tough time finding opinions on this hotel from fellow travelers. Please post a report if you do end up going there in March or come across opinions. Thanks!

We went to Tamarindo twice with our daughter (who was 6 at the time of the first visit and 7 during the next). We like that area of CR very much; it has more reliable weather than other areas in CR and the beach is very nice. We stayed at Capitan Suizo which became our family's favorite place in CR.
We did not stay in Cala Luna but visited that property briefly to get an idea of how it was because it looked very nice from its pictures on the internet. We did not see any of the rooms but noted in general that the property was not as lush as other places we saw in Tamarindo and there are no large trees on the property (meaning no shady areas). The pool wasn't anything special either and as I said, very open with no shade (definitely a concern with kids; you don't want them to be out in the sun all day). Cala Luna is about 30 minutes (walking distance) from the center of the town - if you stay there I would recommend that you walk along the beach and not on the roads since the roads get very dusty.
The biggest disadvantage of Cala Luna in my opinion is the fact that it is not directly on the beach.
Your options on transportation from San Jose are flying, driving or getting a car with a driver. Two domestic airlines fly to Tamarindo; they use small puddle jumpers and the flight takes about 1 hour. Prices are reasonable (search the internet for Sansa or Travelair for details). Another option is to rent a car (I would recommend a 4x4), it is about 5 hours from San Jose to Tamarindo and the roads are decent except the last few kilometers which are not paved. Although you can get along fine in Tamarindo without a car, it is nice to have one for day trips and exploring the area. Renting a large 4x4 (we had a Nissan Pathfinder) is about $500 per week.
Another option is getting a car with a driver. We did not use one but I heard of people doing it and really liking it.
