Airfares to Belize
I am searching for flights to Belize in June from the Midwest (Indianapolis), and have a question. I've heard that flights are cheaper to Belize City during the "off-season). However, all the "discount" flights I'm finding for around $600 are only valid until March 31st. Fares for June are in the $1100 neighborhood. This doesn't make much sense to me, but I figure that maybe the discount fares will not be published until a later date. Does anyone know if this is the case? Basically, I want to know if I should expect the fares to go down for June if I just wait a while, and if so when should I expect them to go down. Or would it be a better idea for me to go ahead and book now from another city like say Chicago where the fare is already $600?
Thank you,
Holmes

I just played around with a few dates on Orbitz from Indy in June and they are quite high. I also changed the depature from Chicago and the price dropped to under $600. You may want to consider leaving from Chicago. Go into Orbitz.com and you'll see what I mean.

Air fares to Belize, like most air fares to anywhere, are irrationally priced. In general, steep discounting occurs fairly close to the departure dates. But you can never tell. TACA for example just had a one-day sale from Houston with prices around US$160. I would certainly wait for several months before committing to one of the high fares. You might also contact one of the travel agents specializing in Belize such as Barb's Belize (she has a Web site) and Katie Valk, who often posts here.

--Lan Sluder

I visited Belize for the first time last spring - late May to early June. I purchased my airfare in March and got a good price from Newark NJ - about $425. While there, I met people who had gotten some fantastic prices - as low as $360-$400 from the midwest and $450-$500 from California. I'd wait and keep checking very regularly or sign up at US Air and American for their "fare-watcher" programs. You get an email when there's a special price to the target location. As Lan mentioned, prices are irrational. A few weeks after I reserved my airfare, the airfares for that trip actually started going up, despite the fact that the date was getting closer and it was off-season. Possibly due to competition from US Airways now flying to BZE regularly, American had really low prices to BZE for a couple months this fall but they've gone back up. If your flight plans are somewhat flexible in terms of dates.... go to Travelocity and choose the "my dates are flexible" option. It will show you what dates are available for lower prices in a given month - you can then go to orbitz or an airline's direct booking site and try those dates to see if you can get a lower price. That's how I got the best price for my trip.

I would keep checking. My experience with the prices is that they are variable, not tied to any factor which we mortals can discern. When I was booking my upcoming February (HIGH season) trip, the fare from the DC area was about $1100, so I used FF miles to buy tickets (perversely, even though the cash fare was high, AA was running a "sale" so it only cost me 30,000 FF miles...). Now, as I'm adding crew to my boat, I've found that today the same itinerary is a screaming bargain at $392. I suspect USAirways' competition is helping things out, at least from the East Coast. Sign up on both AA and USAirways' site to get updates, and set a fare watcher on Expedia -- you might just get lucky.

You may want to hold out on trying to get a flight. I saw the June prices are high. We are going in February and when we first started looking flights were between $700 to $1100. But then we got a price for $470 from O'Hare. You may have to move up the trip or wait it out. I saw a $700 price with US Airways but remember they are trying to come out of bankruptcy and they just had to get an extension to file their plan. If you are going to get travel insurance make sure they will cover your airline.

I visited Belize last year for my honeymoon, and found a very reasonible flight through: http://www.intratours.com. One note of caution: if you do purchase tickets through Intratours, be sure to verify your flight times before you head to the airport. Since Intratours is a flight consolidator, they did not contact us when our flight time changed.

I found a fare to Belize from NYC for a trip in August for $427.40, which seems like a good price in comparison to the prices indicated in the prior posts. Is it possible that the fares will be lower if I wait or should I jump on them now?

Jay

Just for the fun, I just found flights in June from Indianapolis for about $500 and from Chicago for about $435.

From NYC, I don't see anything lower than $500 in August.

I would try with a couple of consolidators, though. Some of them require a flight and hotel stay, but it's usually a good deal...Let me know if you'd like recommendations...
