Advantages: can't think of any apart from cost and (only if you know Rio very well) location.

Disadvantages:
- In general, all flats in Rio tend to be a bit old, so make sure you have some very nice pictures of it.
- Location: most neighbourhoods in Rio are close to a "favela" . Make sure the flat you rent is not very close to any, or you could be in a dangerous spot.
- Pls be asbolutely sure that the flat has air conditioning, otherwise you will be VERY hot.

It helps to analyze if you can provide details of the flat vs the hotel you are considering...

MyMaleEgo, it can be extremaly unsafe if you don't take the necessary precautions. I was born in Rio and my whole family is from Rio and I've been there visiting 100 times... If you are at the right places, the odds of anything unpleasant happening to you are very low, but the tricky thing about Rio is that the nice places are sometimes blocks away from the places you should definetly avoid. That's why I do recomend some researching re the location of the flat you are planning to rent. But please don't take this as a scary warning - it's a lovely town, I've been there 100s of times, nothing ever happened to me and you will have a fantastic time specially during summer
Cheers, J.

So you think it's better to stay in the hotel?
We want to find a nice hotel in Ipanema, can you recommend something?

I just think it's easier, but then again if you come accross a good deal, I'm happy to advise if you have a specific location.

I've never been Rio to stay at hotels ((always w/ family/friends) but I'll ask some questions and post back here w/ suggestions that my friends might have.... when are you planning to go?

I have stayed in both hotels and apartments in Rio (when I was a tourist a long time ago). Now I live here permanently, and I think I can shed some light on your q's.

I disagree to say that apartments tend to be run down. It is the same as a hotel. You get what you pay for. There are 5 star hotels, just like there are 5 star luxury apartments.

The apartment rental business in Rio is very big, and the hotels loose alot of their business. The advantages of renting an apartment is that you save money, you get more value (bigger place, kitchen, etc..) and you have the freedom to have guest over.

The disadvantage is that to make it worth while, it is necessary to stay for a few days (usually 4-5 days). 1 or 2 day stays are better in a hotel. Also, if you like the hotel breakfasts, you wont get that in the apartment.

With regards to safety... you must use common sense in Rio. There are favelas everywhere, just like there are apartments and hotels everywhere. Coming and going from an apartment is a lot less conspicuous than leaving a hotel, if you are trying to avoid looking like a tourist. And the majority of all buildings in Rio, have got security and door guys.

I think the best thing to do is look at some hotels, get a few quotes for apartments, and make the decision from there.

I am sure whatever you choose, you will have a great time in Rio. It is a beautiful city.
