A week to explore a part of Mexico. Where to go?

Jump to last reply

I've traveled to India and Japan but besides a beach trip to Acapulco many years ago have never been to Mexico. Can you believe it? Looking to spend a week in March exploring a part of this country but don't know where to start. Found 3 itineraries:
1) Mexico City, Puebla, Teotihuacán, Xalapa
2) Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, Morelia
3) Maya-Tulum, Chitchen Itza, Merida, Palenque

I am leaning towards the first option because I feel like for a first time visitor, I really should see the capital city, no?
Also, next August, we are going to Peru and Bolivia to explore the Incas, so I figure doing the Maya exploration in the same year may be a bit overkill on ruins. thoughts?
Reading about #2, Guanajuato and San Miguel sounds amazing. So I am totally lost.

Can anyone make a recommendation? We have about 6-7 days. We are 2 guys in our 30s.

Thank You

Sergey
