5 weeks in Argentina, need some advice
We finally reserved our flight to Buenos Aires, mid October to mid November. How does this sound? Fly into B.A. stay 2 nights there to rest up, fly to Mendoza, stay 5 nights, take an overnite bus to Bariloche, stay 5 nights, fly back to B.A. Hope to rent an apartment for a couple weeks to come back to inbetween trips.
Fly to Iguazu Falls for 2 nights, hopefully it will rain before we get there, and the falls will be beautiful. Return to B.A. and a few days later fly to El Califate for 5 nights.
Hope to take day trips to an estanzia, the delta and Colonia and spend the rest of the time enjoying B.A.
WE're mid 60's to mid 70's, but since my husband is a backpacker, he wants to stay in a couple nice hostels, where we can maybe pick up some inexpensive tours. Has anyone stayed at Hosteria La Pastorella in Bariloche? I would like to be close to the town center since we won't have a car. Any other suggestions for Bariloche? I personally like Tres Reys, but it's not available.
Anyone ever stayed at the Hostel del Glaciar Libertador? My husband would be very happy if we just stayed at 2 hostels.
Dr. D. I saw an apartment I liked on Vidt and Soler in Palermo. Is that a safe neighborhood to walk around at night? Are there restaurants and cafes in that area? Should we only consider Recoleta?
This apartment doesn't have phone service. I'm not sure how much of an inconvenience that will be calling for taxis, etc.
I'm sure I'll have a lot more questions, this is just the start.

Another question: How many days do you suggest for El Calafate. We planned 5, but now I'm not sure there is enough for us to do after we've seen the glacier. We don't plan to hike on the glacier, so what else is there that's interesting.

Does anyone know how to get the schedule of a bus company that runs an overnight bus from Mendoza to Bariloche? I read somewhere there is a daily bus and I'd like to make a reservation once we reach B.A. Husband has to try public transportation at least once a trip.

Palermo and Recoletta are both safe central areas. I have just got back - had an appartement in BA for the last few days which was good.
I'd avoid San Telmo at night - if you go to a tango show there get them to pick you up from your accomodation and bring you back.
I made one big mistake when i was there - i wanted to buy some shoes - but I waited until my last day which happened to be a sunday and Santa Fe's shops were all closed.
I booked through http://www.apartmentsbaires.com.ar/Apartments.htm
not the cheapest but all the bills were included (heat, cable tv, local phone calls)
I was on my own and had no problems walking around at night.
The apartement i booked was arround the corner from Pacheco de Melo which has the "eschula gastanomica" which was worth a visit
i hope you enjoy argentina - i certainly did
