I've written a web page on how you can format text in Fodor's posts (bold, Italics, Underline, and Strikeout), include special characters (e.g. à, è, ç, ñ, €, £), and some other tricks. The page can be found at:
http://ljkrakauer.com/tags.htm
I've announced this page in some of the Forums in which I usually post (particularly the Europe forum), but it seems appropriate for me to mention it in Forums Help.
Enjoy!

thanks this is helpful
yestravel is a show off.
(But so is Nepenthe.)
This is fun!
Definitely fun -- and I did use restraint in the other post and only did one feature...
Great!!! Thanks.
YAY! I've often wondered how to format text but couldn't figure it out. This is so helpful - it should be here on the forum somewhere (Katie - hint, hint!).
Thanks, all, for your kind comments. I'm glad the page is helpful.
althom1122 (and Katie), if Fodor's wants to take the page and post it somewhere for easier access (like the "smileys" page at http://www.fodors.com/community/smileys/ ), I'd be happy to donate it. That way, it might be easier for people to find (I try to post about it now and then, but I don't think most people in the Fodor's community know about it). Of course, then they'd have to maintain it, but they'd have complete control over what is said and what is not.
On the other hand, they may find it a bit too long and complex - perhaps they think a simplified version would be more palatable to many posters. Or they may have other standards for their HTML coding, and may not be able to easily gobble up my page.
If they'd prefer to leave it as-is for now, I'll keep maintaining it. It doesn't take much work, but, for instance, the recent format changes required a substantial update (from my point of view, the changes improved the Preview function considerably).

Oops, an odd thing happened in my previous post. Katie, I'd call this a bug:
I included a link to the fodor's "smileys" page, at:
http://www.fodors.com/community/smileys/
However, I included it in a parenthetical clause, so right after the link there's a closing right parenthesis, ")". The Fodor's software, when posting this, included that right paren as part of the link (notice that it's blue in my previous post)! The result is that the link in my previous post does not work (the one in this post does work).
I didn't notice the inclusion of the right paren when I previewed my post. There's a lesson: when you preview a post, check all included links by clicking on them, to be sure they work! You can do that by right-clicking on them, and opening them in a new tab or a new window.
(If the programmers fix this at some point in the future, the paren might turn from blue to black, and the link might start working retroactively.)

Unfortunately, I think that issue conflicts with another: http://www.fodors.com/community/fodorite-lounge/i-wonder-if-they-fixed-the-part-of-the-server-script.cfm
They probably won't be able to accomodate both intents, I don't think.
Bozo, I think you're correct. Some reading has convinced me that many more characters are legal in a URL than I thought.
Katie, I withdraw my suggestion that this is a bug - nothing needs to be fixed here. I just need to be more careful about the context in which I embed a URL (and, as I suggested above, all URLs should be tested with the Preview button before hitting Submit).
Larry, how to I install French punctuation?
Mea culpa, I see them above. too many senior momebts!
....
YES ..... yes ..... do see this thread initiated a couple years ago in 2009 .... however 'topping' for those (like moi) who don't recall all the nuances of how to format their responses.
Just found this very useful post - thanks so much!
