I know this is a trivial question, but how much does an ice-cream cone cost where you live?
One afternoon last week, I was craving for something sweet (I was in Boston), and I saw a small independent ice-cream/coffee shop. I wanted to get a small ice-cream cone, but was shocked to see it's $4 for a small cup, and $5.50 for one in waffle cone.
And last month, I had an ice-cream at JP Licks. The smallest, non-kiddie size in regular sugar cone was $4.
If one wants a bigger size, plus waffle cone, plus toppings, an ice-cream can easily cost close to $6!
I know I can easily get a decent take-out lunch for $6, so a $4+ ice-cream seems a bit extravagant. With the economy the way it is, I wonder if people will still be getting ice-cream when summer comes? A family of 4 can easily spend $20 on ice-cream (you can buy a few gallons of ice-cream from the grocery store for the same price!)

A couple of bucks at local places. INteresting to note that all of the Coldstone Creameries (expensive ice cream) in our area recently closed. I guess people here can no longer afford $4, or $5 or more ice creams
$1 at McD
Well, Breyers.com costs $3.99 a half-gallon on special at Walgreens, whereas Dreyers.com always costs $5.99 and is never discounted, to my knowledge.
What?
Oh, I thought you said clone. Never mind.
.69 cents at McDonalds.
With 6 of us in the house it costs too much for Baskin Robbins or other name brand places. During summer when we really want cones a lot we buy a couple gallons of Breyers and cones and make them ourselves.
I think Cold Stone Creamery charges even more for an ice-cream, due to their "mix-in" schtick. I never liked their ice-cream as I find it has no flavor, so I'm not sorry to see them close down.

I suppose ice-cream is expensive from ice-cream shops because the customers are seasonal. The stores stay open all year long whether it's 90F out or 10F out. While JP Licks is usually mobbed during the summer, I was the only customer there last month, when it was 20F out. I do like having ice-cream in the winter, because I don't have to worry about it melting and dripping all over my hands/clothes.
I guess one option for me is to skip lunch and eat ice-cream instead.
I'd love to tell you but our local ice cream parlour doesn't re-open until March.
49 cents at our McDonalds. Culvers is about $2.
How come my McDonald's charges $1.49 for an ice cream cone?
B and R charges $3.50 for a cone.
There's a Drive-In about a mile up the road that's open year round now. The smallest soft serve ice cream cones are $1.50 I think. Haven't bought one in awhile.
Here in NH it's $4.50 for a small waffle cone. Too expensive and even the small is too large to enjoy as a regular treat. We always thought a €1.20 cone in France to be a bargain compared to the prices as home.
When we are in Europe our habit is to walk through the village after our evening meal, to find an open steet vendor and buying an ice cream cone for our dessert.
We rarely eat ice cream at home, so it's become our special vacation treat.
One half kilo is 24 pesos so that would be U$8.00 ..
One more reason to visit Buenos Aires lol...
It's crazy that an ice cream cone costs the same as a sandwich.
My favorite splurge is getting a cone from McDonalds drive-through.
I can't eat ice cream from Carvel or other places like it - for some reason I get a stomach ache from that stuff. Too much air in the mix, perhaps??
Interesting you would ask this. We were in San Diego for the weekend, and at Seaport Village dd wanted ice cream. I gave her 6.00 and sent her to the Ben and Jerries. She came running back and said "I need 80 cents. I was shocked and expected her to come back with a big waffle or something..nope. One scoop with sprinkles in a cup. Almost 7.00. Yikes.
In Chicagoland, Northern IL, IN, and very poor SW and South Central MI- good ice cream (not custard type Diary Queen places)will cost for a double dipped cone anywhere from $2.25 to $3.99.
And none of them ever have a line that is shorter than the door. We have about 5 to 10 major lines for this and many small, individual dairy/creameries etc. too in MI- and most of them are totally within the group of "most prosperous" in town and out of town- BOTH.
Some near us are Oberweis, B& Robbins, Coldstone Creamery, Ben & Jerry's (not as many) but all of those above have numerous locations-but there are multitudes of others with just 2 or 3 outlets. The one in SW MI I love is called Wild Patch. We also have many family named ice cream shops within the city- coupled with chocolate- as the Dove shops were.
The cones are not $5.50 yet. An entire sunday with whipped cream, three toppingss and two kinds of fruit is just around $5.00 and could easily feed two or three.
The best of all is a Chicago classic called the Rainbow cone. It is 5 flavors/5 scoops in a waffle/sugar cone that is a 60 year old classic. I think the last time I bought a Rainbow Cone it was $2.25.
This is top of the line high, high butterfat made on premises ice cream.
None of the above, not even the Melody Lane's (they had a 20 person Sunday)- ever go out of business. The owners just die. LOL!
BTW, the $60 a person higher end (to us) restaurants of quantity had 2 hour waits last weekend near me. Everything of every level was packed last Friday, Saturday, Sunday. We tried getting into the show too and left because it was too crowded and the one we wanted to see the most was sold out. At $12.00 a pop, I couldn't believe it.
People are not broke by any means if this occurs, IMHO.
We have the grandson of Rainbow Cone with 2 places near us too- and he is going gangbusters, as well.
And yes, Ben & Jerry's is a lot more, and I won't go to them because it isn't anywhere near the quality of an Oberweis at 2/3rds of the price.
MomDDTravel - You've got to be kidding! $7 for an ice-cream?
For you parents out there, how do you say NO to your children when you are walking pass a Ben & Jerry's and they want ice-cream??? Get one and share among the whole family?
YK - actually that is what we ended up doing. I am not a big ice cream eater so it was not a biggie for me; dh wanted one but he waited for dd to finish what she wanted (knowing she never eats the whole thing) - We had 8 people with us plus granddaughter - no way would we spend 56.00 on ice cream. Not worth it.
Here in Southern California, the Rite-Aid drug stores kept the "Thrifty" ice cream counters in their stores after they acquired that chain. I believe that it is still $.99 per scoop. They still sell Thrifty brand ice cream by the gallon, also.
I'm not a big ice cream fan, so I couldn't tell you how it compares to other brands. I just know that locally, there is a Rite-Aid in the same strip mall as a Cold Stone store. That will probably be one of the Cold Stones that closes first around here.
Cold Stones are still open here, but they're busy year-round. We usually only go there with a twofer coupon. Otherwise I buy ice cream in bulk.
yk, well, you could live where I live: no Ben & Jerry's, no Coldstone Creamery, just DQ or McDonald's.
0.70€ and it's approx. 50 grams. Up to 3 come in a day fresh baked waffle.
We only buy Italian Ice cream when the shop is open from March to Oct.
SV
ooooh how I love DQ! Good thing there isn't one to be found in my neighborhood!
ivk - I use to stop at Thrifty's on my way home from Jr. High - it was a big deal - the 99 cent back then
- there was one right on Govenor Drive in U.C. in San Diego.
There are a number of places that make there own ice cream about $4 a cone.
Our local ice cream stand is Hodgies - a quarter kiddie is about $2.80 if I recall correctly (that's a very generous scoop). Its homemade too.
Richardson's is sold at another stand and that is about the same price ($2.80 for a large single scoop).
yk - were you on Newbury St by any chance?
I was at the Newbury St JP Licks last month. I think all JP Licks have the same price?
But the other place I went by last week, was on Mass Ave across from the First Church of Christ Scientist complex. I forgot the name.
I wonder how much does Lizzy's charge for a small cone?
http://www.lizzysicecream.com/index.php
Well I never buy ice cream here in Seattle, but I happen to know
that 1 scoop is 15 peso (~$1) in Cabo San Lucas Mexico (and both the pistachio or coconut are excellent!).
How much....too much. I rarely buy an ice-cream cone. If I want one I make it at home..then I can do REALLY big scoops. Even at that, I can't get over how much ice-cream is these days. The smaller container, three quarts, NOT half gallon anymore. I don't buy Ben & Jerrys and the like, WAY too much money, but do like to get a good ice-cream...Dryers here in the west, I think it's Edies in the east or maybe Edies is gone because I think Dryers bought the company.
In DC a couple of years ago we went to Maggie Moo's our first time in the place. I was with my husband and I ordered a small butter pecan and my husband had a small something other. She took vanilla ice cream and added a few pecans to it and served it to me. I asked what it was and she said it was butter pecan. I said how can you have the flavor of butter pecan if they are not in the mix, etc. She just shrugged her shoulders. It was going to be over $5.00 just for my cone. I told her to forget it. Dumbest thing I have everseen. She had strawberries ready to mix in to the vanilla if you wanted strawberry ice cream. Can't believe the place is still in business.
Wild Patch in Marcellus, MI has butter pecan with real butter and real pecans so thick that you NEED the spoon for the cone- that's made not 50 yards away- and it is under $3.00 for three large, large scoops.
Location, location, location.
Depends.
At the cheap end: nothing.
We have a Korean tofu restaurant and they have a free soft ice cream machine in the back for those who want to finish the meal off with a bit of vanilla ice cream (sure beats getting a stick of funny-bunny Korean chewing gum for dessert!)
At the high end, I used to crave going to the Chocolate Factory in Ghirardelli Square after coming home from an overseas business trip.
A one-scoop is probably about $6 by now - I haven't tracked the pricing. If enough people go, especially kids, we'll get THE EARTHQUAKE!
http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/vzBSlQezq2GJkDeqBQxdtw?select=ERtwa7y3FmR747ECoGI8kg
Otherwise, I'm not an ice cream person, but the kids always have some ice cream in the frig, usually Dreyer's.
There's another Earthquake at Swensens Ice Cream Parlor. Eight scoops of ice cream...each scoop has to be a different flavor, then you have to select eight different toppings, and then they add the nuts, whipped cream, and cherries. My brother and I each ate one years ago...late 70's I think. We have a plaque on the wall with our names and the date at the ice cream shop. We check it out every now and then when he's up visiting. We'll go by for a cone and to check out our plaques. LOL
Anyone remember when an ice cream cone was a nickle a scoop?
80ct per scoop from the italian guy once he opens his parlour again in late March. (You realize, it's still winter??) 1.20€ per 500g from Humana/Milchunion which is almost as good, bought at Tengelmanns.
As noted earlier, $1 at McDonald's.
5 years ago, the 1€ McDonalds vanilla with caramel or strawberry was HUGE, today it's only about 2/3 of it's original size.
Same where you are?
I stopped buying ice cream cones from parlors quite a while ago...the prices then were about 4 to 5 dollars for a single to double scoop.
I decided I would prefer to buy a high quality pint of ice cream that will last me longer than one ice cream cone.
I do sometimes treat myself to a nice cold stone shake as they are really a treat.
While McD's ice-cream is very affordable, it's not the same having soft serve vs real ice-cream. Plus I like the excitement of entering an ice-cream shop and be overwhelmed by dozens of flavor choices. I guess all these justify the high cost of ice-cream at ice-cream shops?
Oh, I thought you said clone. Never mind.

Robes, is that geek humor?
Baskin Robbins is about $1.50 for a large scoop. The problem is when everyone wants a waffle cone, 2 scoops with sprinkles. THAT adds up.
Don't you guys have Blue Bell?
Is McDonald's "ice cream" even really ice cream? Never had one....just wondering.
I don't eat ice cream, but we have a stellar frozen yoghurt place here in DC called Yogato, which is a combo if yoghurt and gelato, and they only have 3-4 flavors, but myriad toppings, and a small one is $4.00 (not sure what the others are).
The guy who owns it is (literally) a rocket scientist from Stanford. We just adore the place, because you can get anywhere from 5% to 100% off for answering trivia questions....and we always choose the Geography category and always get them right.
Anyone care to name three countries that end with the letter "l"?
Two countries whose names begin with A but don't end with A?
Five countries whose names end in Y?
See? It's a real bargain for a Fodorite! And the "yogato" is delicious and low in calories, with only a hint of sweetness.
We had a Marble Slab (a cold slab knock-offf) open in November and go out of business prior to Valentine's day.
Bruster's is my favorite. For $3 you can get a huge cone. That is what the kids do. I splurge for a pint for $4 and then eat on it for a week.
In Rochester NY I buy my favorite (Abbott's) for $1.25 for the kid's size. (But, sadly, I only buy a couple a year.)
StCirq
McDonalds ice cream is good if you don't like fat in ice cream. I don't care for the fat in ice cream and frozen custard so McDonald's is good, in my opinion.
Think the hot fudge sundaes are still $1.00.
McDonalds also has a yogurt with fruit that is very good.
crefloors: now I've heard of fish stories, but an ice cream story!!! LOL!
Brava! I can barely finish one big scoop and nowadays go for the root beer float at the Chocolate Factory. Good for you, finishing an entire Earthquake by yourself!
Yes the size of the Earthquake has shrunk to almost half its original size while the price has more than doubled.
DH says McDonald's ice cream is frozen yogurt, but I think it's ice milk. It's definitely not full fat. I like the taste.
Our local homemade shop sells it for $1.80. It's fabulous! They've been in business for 50 years. 18yr old daughter started there when she was 14. She used to get raises every year until they raised the minimum wage. She started at only 50 cent below. Now they all make the same. She cam home that day she found out and said, "It's not fair! Isn't that Communism?" Oh what a telling comment that was, and how sad she will soon see more of it.
BUMPING this thread for summer.
Yesterday, I walked past a Ben & Jerry's counter. A small cup is $4.25! (Cone costs extra.) I thought $4 was outrageous, but $4.25?!?! As much as I wanted some ice cream, I passed. I just couldn't justify paying that much for a small cup of ice cream.
$1.50 at Walgreens. Individually wrapped. And now I cannot have any
In NYC nothing is cheap, and for sure I wouldn't go for a cone. But when Haagen Daz is on sale, everyone tells everyone and we buy whatever the freezer can hold and eat what we want when we went it.
Was most upset when the HD Vanilla Fudge was gone from the case, only to learn from their delivery person it was discontinued because fudge was too expensive. Can't find a Vanilla Fudge from any other brand. So stick with the usual chocolate or vanilla. So much for life in the big city!
kureiff--Just in case you need more prodding to go to Paris, we saw a couple of Ben & Jerry's there last week!
We have an ice cream truck that comes through the neighborhoods in the summer, and DS usually grabs just a dollar when he hears the obnoxious music. I think most items are between .50 and $2.
65 cents at our little Mom and Pop drug store; even in this hot summer weather and it's good and a large serving.
Self serve frozen yogurt with any toppings you can imagine is all the rage here in So Cal. Around .30-.40 cents per ounce and well worth it in my book. Non-fat, variety of flavours and you can mix and match as much as you want.
