Zurich / Zug / Lucerne / Wengen in 4 days?
Hi
I have never been to Switzerland before and I am planning on going there in December 2006. I only have 4 / 5 days in Switzerland and according to Karen Brown I should do Zurich (lakes and old part), Zug (not to be missed), Lucern (lakes and views) and Wengen (Jungfraujoch).
Is this a good itinerary ? Can anyone help me with this please ?

December: weather will be cold, grey and maybe snow.
Zürich: 1 day (take evening train to Lucerne)
Lucerne: 1 day (take late afternoon train to Wengen)
Wengen: 3 days
Zug is nice but you'll get the old town feeling in Zürich and Lucerne. I'd give it a miss.
See sbb.ch for train schedules.

Thanks a million Schuler !
Can you give me more info on how you would have planned 3 days in Wengen ?
Would you rather recommend staying in Murren ?
Do you know how I can get from Wengen or Murren to Venice ?

I'm not a Berner Oberland expert. I'd put in key words: Interlaken, Berner Oberland, Wengen, Murren, Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald into the search function (not all together.) There's lots of good info in this forum.

Hi travellerza,
As usual, schuler's information and advice is perfect!
Just a few notes: deciding between Muerren and Wengen will depend on how isolated you want to be. Both towns are car-free and both are quaint mountain villages. Some people say that Muerren has the better views (I've only skied through the town and didn't notice any particularly superior views). But Muerren is more isolated, harder to get to.
To see your rail connections into both Muerren & Wengen, and on to Venice, look at the Swiss rail site at www.rail.ch.

A vote for an afternoon in Zug! Its so close to Zurich(not 30 minutes by train), why not? Beautiful lakefront promenade (?December) with swans, quaint very walkable old town, Clock tower to climb for fantastic views above the city (get the key for a deposit next door in the police station),and of course, echte Zugertorte--their famous sweet treat!
Of course, its even better in warm weather.

I can not find accomodation for the 18 to 19 December in Murren and Wengen. I can find accomodation in Interlaken. Should I go for Interlaken ? Any hotels in Interlaken that you can recommend ?

Why just Murren or Wengen? DId you try Lauterbrunnen - we stayed there, you can get to everywhere from there, and family owned Hotel Silberhorn was lovely, - don't know your budget but there was also an awesome family hostel up the road. I would rather stay in Lauterbrunnen than Interlaken - it is so easy to get everywhere from there - we did Schilthorn, Jungrauhoc, sledding through all the towns, walk from Murren to Gimmelwald, - you can do all that from INterlaken, but it adds another train ride into the mix

To Mssr. Schuler und Cicerone
I will be spending several days in Zeurich prior to continuing on to Nice in late Mai.
I have previously stayed at the 'Cow Palace';>* on Leonardstrasse and found the location on the hill to be covenient, especially so with the student furnicular (fascinating bypass trackwork)
However, the evenings were rather 'drab' as I was unfamiliar with any restaurants in the area.
I have researched your postings and it seems you are fond of the Adler as well as the Kindli. Can you please elaborate further as to restaurants near these locations?
Also, can you recco..an interesting day trip from Zeurich.
Thank You

Hello Vilkas,
I'm not an expert on Zürich hotels or restaurants since I rarely make it to that area. I hope someone else can help you with those questions.
Day trip:
Take the train to Arth-Goldau. Take the Rigi Bahn up to Rigi Kulm. Walk around. Take the Rigi Bahn down to Vitznau. Walk around. Take the Vitznau ferry to Lucerne. Visit the old town. Go back to Zürich in the evening by train.

vilkas: if you really want to hear from cicerone/etc you might want to post this independently - personally, I can tell you my 20 yr old son recently stayed at the Adler, recommended from this board and it was exc. - I emailed direct to reserve for him - it was 120 for a single room w/ bath, very clean and staff extremely helpful to him.
