Zurich to Frankfurt (5 nights with car, late August)

I've been kicking this around for awhile.

Flying into Zurich on Monday am and flying out of Frankfurt Saturday afternoon.

Currently, my plan is to rent car in Zurich and return to Frankfurt (I know about fees).

My current itinerary is first night stay in Stein am Rhein and visit Schaffhausen.

Next day, drive and stay in Meersburg (day trip Landau).

Next day, drive to Nordlingen and stay a night there.

Next day, drive to Rothenburg and stay there.

Next day, drive to Heidelberg and stay there.

Sat morning drive to Frankfurt airport from Heidelberg for flight.

My wife and I are not into museums, but more shopping, eating, drinking beer and wine, some light hiking, people watching, etc. I went on a 9 hour Rhein cruise years ago, so no need to repeat that,

I am flying from Athens to Zurich (I can change that flight to something more exciting if anybody has any great ideas!

What might one change with the above itinerary? (or what better way to spend 5 nights before having to fly out of Frankfurt? Not necessarily interested in a big city like Berlin)

Thanks in advance for any creative thoughts!!!

There is absolutely no need to rent a car at ZRH. Train connections from Zurich airport to German border towns (Singen, Konstanz, Friedrichshafen, Lindau.....) are short and frequent (about every 30 min).
Check the scenic Rhine river boat travel from Schaffhausen/Rhine Falls via Stein am Rhein to Konstanz/Kreuzlingen.

Alternatives:
medieval Swiss cities (with and without citywalls) and castles,
Swiss mountains,
Alsace - Pfalz: Mulhouse (car-, railway- and textile museums), Ecomusee, Colmar, Riquewihr/Ribeauville vienyards, Freiburg im Breisgau, Hochkoenigsbourg, Strasbourg, Speyer, Worms .....

In Germany, "drinking beer and wine" and driving are even less compatible than in the U.S.

I think the German resident posters can give you the most up-to-date info.

BAC is lower than the U.S. to begin with, and there is even a lower limit if you are involved in an accident. See for example, http://www.spangdahlem.af.mil/news/s...p?id=123252623 or page 2 of "www.2cr.army.mil/Newcomers/drivingingermany.pdf"

When I go out with German friends in Germany, the drivers don't drink any alcoholic beverages.

My original thought was, why not just fly into and out of FRA and do a "circle" tour of the German towns you are wanting to see.

Be sure to add some brats (especially Thuringia brats) to your wish list!! YUM!

Between Rothenburg and Heidelberg take the Castle Road - the castle-studded Castle Road meandering along the Neckar River Valley - cute towns for stopping, etc - a place you cannot get to by train though special buses do ply the road from about May thru Sep/Oct or so.

Necker....I don't want to deal with trains. Car allows me freedom to change plans on the fly and not have to worry about schedules.

Greg..thanks for the info. Wouldn't think about getting behind wheel of car after drinking.

Simpson..too much driving. Willing to pay more $$$ for less driving.

PalenQ..thanks! Great info!!

Bob..you are assuming I am sensible! . Sis-in-law loves Nordlingen. We figure stay one night there then short drive and stay in Rothenberg avoid leaving bags in car in Roth...

Thanks!

There is absolutely no problem if you rent a car at ZRH airport (Switzerland) and drop it off at FRA airport (Germany), as long as the huge surplus you have to pay for drop off in another country is OK for you.
I fully understand that you want reach the German border (Rhine river) by car as soon as possible instead of waiting up to 30 minutes for a may be Constance bound train (1 hr journey).
Have a nice trip.

What do you consider a "huge" surplus?

$645 total for 5 days...Zurich to Frankfurt including complete insurance for a standard sized car with auto transmission.

That seems reasonable..
