Zugspitz - To ride by the cable car or the cog wheel train or both

We are a family of 4 adults and one 4 year old boy traveling to the Mittenwald region in June ... I am looking at the website for the Zugspitz and trying to undertsand my options ...

http://www.zugspitze.de/en/winter/be...-rundreise.htm

Can someone please help me understand how it works and make sure that I am looking at this correctly... Reading on the above website and a few other websites, here is what I have gathered

- I can take the cog wheel train from Garmisch ... That will take us upto SonNAlpin .. Then from there there is a cable care Gletscherbahn that will take us to the top .. This will total take about 75 mins of travel time
- On the way back, I can take the eibsee-seilbahn back down to Eibsee and take the train back to Garmisch ..
- If I decide to drive and not take the train, I would take the cable car up and down from Eibsee
- The cost is the same for the roundtrip to Zugspitz, whether I take the train and cable car combo or just the cable car from Eibsee ..

Have I understood this correctly?

If yes, where do I get my tickets for the train + cable car combo? Also, is the train ride worth the extra time? I am thinking my son might enjoy it and also be a different experience for us adults and give us a chance to relax and enjoy ...

I know this is too sepcfic a question but I do hope you all will help me resolve this ...

We took the cable car from Eibsee. You leave the car at the parking lot and buy the roundtrip tickets at the cable car "station".
We took the cog wheel train back. It stopped at Eibsee. Lots of tunnels so you don't see much. If I were to do it again, I'd take the cable car both ways (yes, the price is the same). The view is absolutely stunning. Make sure you go on a clear day.

I have a profound fear of heights, but my best friend convinced me to take the cable car to the top of Zugspitze...despite my fear I had a blast, and would happily do it again. The views are awesome!

Some photos of my experience are here:

Cable car up and down. But it's very weather dependant and can get quite busy. we took the first car up in the morning.

Seems like cable car seems to be the overwhelming preference ... I was looking forward to a train ride ) ... i guess the kid in me wants to go on the train ... But will take all the practical advice and go cable car both ways ...

I never used the cable car an I've been there quite a few times. Simple reason, the train is faster and carries more people. What else would you do up there than ski anyway. If it just wouldn't be that flat up there. No decent runs from the top unless there's lots of snow to ski down the whole way.
Much better than walking from the top.

Actually if you go in winter and all of you know how to ski, on a day were there's enough snow, why not rent skis and wedel all the way down. It doesn't nearly take as long as you'd expect.
Well, a 4 year old couldn't do it, but the adults could, so...
