Zimmer frei places on Rhine or Mosel rivers?
Does anyone know how I can get a listing of zimmer frei places to stay in the middle Rhine or Mosel river areas? I have searched and searched online but see nothing, nor anything about this on the general German tourist board web site. Is this something you can only find out about once you are there? We will be traveling in these 2 areas for 2 weeks+ in early May....do we need to book in advance or can we just "wing it" and book once we are in the towns? Our last foreign trip was a month in Austria and we stayed exclusively in zimmer frei accomidations and loved it. If anyone knows anything about this type of place in Mosel or Rhine please let me know.

Hi Anna. You can use this site for the Mosel and other towns in the Rheinland-Pfalz region. <BR> <BR>http://tourist.rlp.net/default.html <BR> <BR>Type in the town next to "Ort" then hit "Suchen", and a list will come up. Look under "Zimmerarten" for each listing. <BR>"Ferienwohnung" means vacation rental; Privatvermieter" means B&B. Some of the places have web links. I can recommend Haus Hilken (B&B)in Cochem (very tidy, great breakfast, friendly, inexpensive, fantastic location near the old town center and the castle.) There's another (unlisted) place just 2 doors up the street run by the Mattes family - a B&B and a fully-equipped apartment with 2 BR, large living room, kitchen, and balcony, for 75 DM/night. We stayed there in June last year and found it perfect for the three of us. tel. 02671/5448 <BR> <BR>The above site is not as productive for the Rhine Gorge, but there are a number of places listed at www.loreleyvalley.com . However, there are many others listed with the tourist offices in the towns there, many of which have websites. Maybe you could e-mail me the towns you're most interested in and I could check out their town sites (they're mostly in German) for you and/or provide you with e-mail addresses for the local tourist offices. <BR> <BR>If you'll be there for a full 2 weeks, you might enjoy the extra room you'll have with a vacation rental as well as the freedom to be on your own breakfast schedule. <BR> <BR>Let me know if you need any further help with this! <BR> <BR>Russ

Thank you both for the web page URLs. I have looked them over and it all sounds very nice. I get so confused about picking a town(s) to stay in that I just go round in circles over and over trying to plan this. It's so hard when I have never seen these places and have only brief descriptions to go by. Can people who *have* been there tell what is the most *scenic, "quaint" and peaceful* town on the Mosel and middle Rhine IYO? We like to hike but don't care for nightlife. Greatly prefer small personal places to stay, so that's why I said zimmer frei accommodations instead of hotels (although that Auf Schoneburg hotel sounds great from what I've read on message boards). Can we wait till we are *at* the town to book zimmer frei rooms in early to mid May? I'd rather do it that way if possible so we can see what the place actually looks like and what its location is, but I would book in advance if it will be hard to find rooms at that time of year.

Anna, you should be able to book something once you're there - May is a slow month for these areas. If you want quaint (small and cute) scenic, quiet, and good hiking, focus on St. Goar on the Rhine and maybe Bullay on the Mosel. St. Goar's scenery is magnificent. It's never silent anywhere on the Rhine - the barges and trains purr and zoom day and night - but St. Goar is as quiet as it gets - check to see how late the restaurants are open there before planning on a late dinner! There is a fantastic hiking trail along the cliffs from behind town that heads southward through the vineyards and fields, past the Loreley Rock, to Oberwesel; you'll find another across the river that leads to Burg Katz castle. There are probably 8-10 private places to stay, and a few more "apartment" rentals in private homes, but they simply aren't represented on the internet. The tourist office is on Heerstr. #86, the pedestrian zone there; you can contact them in advance if you wish at [email protected] <BR> <BR>Bullay on the Mosel is a great spot. You can hike to Burg Arras (see Bavarian Ben's post for a photo) or to the Marienburg just across the river via Alf (the small building on the ridge in the following photo is the Marienburg) <BR>www.mosel-reisefuehrer.de <BR>and there are short hikes to local wineries there as well. A nice, paved bike path connects Bullay with Zell, Briedel, Pünderich, and other towns. Bullay is really small - much smaller than Cochem. You may be able to rent a bike at the train station there now - I picked mine up in Alf across the river (ferry.) The tourist office (in a travel agency in the town center)might help you with a reservation: 06542/21141 - Frau Eberhard doesn't do English. <BR> <BR>If you don't want to go this small-town, Cochem is only a couple of train stops away, is truly lovely, and is still unlikely to disturb you with its meager nightlife. Agreed that Bacharach is a good place to base yourself for this area. Pension Lette is superb and I highly recommend it. Dinner in the Kranenturn is quite good. Bacharach has some very nice wine bars and one really good pub full of friendly locals. This is a very pleasant town. You can catch the river cruises right outside the town walls. Stay with Lette you won't regret it. She is just down the street west of the Kranentrun on left side. Nice lady, nice rooms, nice breakfast, overall a nice operation.

Probably too late for this trip, but the individual German states used to have wonderful brochures that listed EVERY accomdation available. I even found the name of 4 places to stay in the little village my great grandfather came from. I got these by writing first to the German National TOurist Office in NY and then to the individual states in Germany. They were in German, but easy enough to understand. I don't know if this has all been transfered to the internet.

Zimmer Frei is not a type of place, but literally translated means "Room"(Zimmer) "Frei" (Available or free). <BR>So, the Zimmer Frei sign you see out front tells you that there is a room available. Do a web search on Pensions for the area you want, and you should get some good information. If you are going to wing it, the train stations or city information offices will have a list of accomodations available. I"m with you - love the charm of most pensions with flower boxes and feather beds! Have fun!

Every town of almost any size in Germany will have private residences that have "Zimmer Frei". There is no need to contact them for advance reservations. When you see a sign hanging outside you will know that they have a vacancy.
But be warned: Many will not accept one-nighters. Most will prefer people that stay two or more nights. Also, in towns that have a festival going on, you might have trouble finding a Zimmer Frei. In that case go to the next town. In Germany you won't have to travel more than 3 miles to the next town.

Anna: By far the most scenic town on the Mosel River is Cochem. While there, don't forget to visit some of the wine cellars and sample their wines. Also, in Cochem there is a castle above the town which has a great restaurant with a terrace. And while in that area, absolutely do not miss Burg Eltz - one of the three most picturesque castles in Germany.

Anna, the short answer to your question is "Yes, you can leave it till you're there". We did, and our trip was in July when it's busier. The trick is to arrive in a town or village (like you, we prefer the intimate personal experience over the crowded tourist bustle!) before 4pm, go straight to the info centre (always well signposted) and ask. They will produce a list, and will make recommendations if you describe what you're after.
We loved Bacharach am Rhein, and for real tranquility the villages along the Mosel are tops (Berncastel-Kues, Cochem...).
