Zermatt in May- what can we expect in terms of "off season"

Zermatt in May- what can we expect in terms of "off season"
My BF and I will be in northern Italy in mid May and we wanted to spend a couple nights in Zermatt. We wanted to ski a little (I know it is very limited), explore the town, any hiking/gondola rides, etc. I know this is the off season and I've been reading that many restaurants shops and hotels will be closed (one source said more than half). We already did hotel research and we'd stay at Unique Hotel Post, so that's sorted. But how dead is dead? Would we just not get the feel for Zermatt at all? Will the streets be totally quiet? Favorite bars shut down? I wanted to see the igloo bar but I think that will be shut. Should we just wait until we can get there during a better time? Any thoughts or experiences are appreciated. Thanks!

I often visit Switzerland in the off season. Too me, Most hotels and restaurants being closed means 'pleasantly quiet'.
You'd have to visit Zermatt in the height of the season to fully appreciate how nice off season really is.
As long as the attractions you want to visit are open and operating, I'd not give it a second thought.

I've visited Zermatt twice during its season, once for a week to ski and once for a day.
I have to say that I didn't enjoy it at all; it was too crowded for my enjoyment. So, I agree with Melnq8 -- you should enjoy its quiet and peace. So long as you've found a hotel you like that is open, you'll be fine.

The cableways to Sunnegga - Blauherd - Unterrothorn will be closed in May; Gornergrat and Matterhorn Paradise (up to Trockener Steg/Gandegg/Furggrat) are running in May.

You won't go hungry CJ, plenty will still be open. Lots of people live in Zermatt and they need to eat!
