Zagreb to Plitvice Please HELP!
We are two American girls traveling from Munich to Zagreb in order to get to the Plitvice lakes. Does anyone know the best way to get from Zagreb to the lakes? We don't have a car and our taking the eurolines bus to Zagreb. Thanks!

Hi
There is no direct line Zagreb - Plitvice - Zagreb, but this is what you can do:
take one of daily bus lines from Zagreb main bus station towards Zadar, Sibenik, Split or Dubrovnik. Before you have to ask at the station if the bus goes across the Plitvice Lakes. In the bus, you have to tell the driver to make the stop at the Lakes (entrance 1). It takes about 2,5 hrs. When you go back to Zagreb, you have to be at the bus station at Plitvice lakes (entrance 1) and wave to make the bus stop. As I know, it is a real little adventure, but some people are going like that. The bus ticket is cca. 10 euro in one direction. So in both ways it’s cca. 20 euro (cca 150 Croatian Kuna), the entrance ticket is 110 Croatian Kuna (cca 15 euro). All together for transportation and entrance cca 35 euro.

do be careful on the way back
the buses are funny about the timetables so if i were you id get chummy with someone with a car - just in case ( of be super flexible with your own arrangements)
its easy to meet people there especially if youre staying overnight in the park or just go have a coffee in the evening in the big hotel Jezero ( massive dining room) and see if you can tee up a lift should you get stuck
plenty of older travellers who would oblige

Without a car, I recommend that you book a tour to the lakes. It will be cheaper (the enterance fee to the park is steep when not included in some package) you will meet more people and this is the way most of the Plitvice lakes are seen by tourists, even Croatian themselves. I did the independant thing and there's really no reason. You will be surrounded by people in the park, taking the lake boat, at the lunch places so you might as well save yourself some money and get a nice tour. Bus with a bathroom comes to mind. When you arrive in Zagreb at the Autobusini Glavni Kolodor (Main bus terminal) you can walk over to the Plitvice Lakes Park office (its on the same side and same street as the Palace hotel I forget the name) and they will hook you up and you can get the layout of the park before you get there.
As you are fellow Americans I know your concept of National parks is different than the Croatian national parks. In particular, you should think of Plitvice like a very large well organized botanical garden in nature. I have rented forest fire watch towers in Oregon national parks so let me tell you, these national parks here are not wilderness oriented in the least. Lots of wooden walkways and stairs with benches and other resting areas to contemplate the view. I hope it doesn't sound like I am disrespecting the lakes as they are one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. But its very civilized and has had tourists visit for over 100 years so let the experts show you the ropes.
