I will be in Zagreb, Croatia in October and want to go to Dubrovnik, from there to Podgorica, Montenegro, from there to Belgrde, Serbia, then back to Zagreb, Croatia.
What is the best way to get from one place to the next?

IME, the Rough Guide has the best information about transportation options.
It also depends on how much time you have and whether you want to see anything else of Croatia, Montenegro or Serbia. For example, Plitvice, Split, Kotor, etc. Or perhaps you only want to visit these specific places?
If you are only wanting to go directly to Dubrovnik then fly there. Fly Dubrovnik to Belgrade - I'm not sure whether Podgorica even has an airport. Otherwise you could be looking at buses or possibly trains though there are no trains anywhere from Dubrovnik. Doing it by road will mean spending hours at a time on public transport.
Personally I would rent a car and drive, or at least drive for part of the trip depending on how much time I had. That way I could at least see other places along the way.
There is a train from Bar in Montengro to Belgrade. Lonely Planet "Western Balkans" says its very scenic, but also very hot in the summer - should be OK in October. Otherwise public transport will require the use of buses - I didn't think they were too bad.
As julia says, to go direct from Zagreb to Dubrovnik you should fly. The second best option would be the ferry - http://www.jadrolinija.hr/default.aspx?lang=2 - but it will take all day.
From Belgrade to Zagreb, again, I would look at flights, but there is a direct train (see bahn.de for schedules, seat61.com for info on train travel in the Balkans.)
I used Lonely Planet for travel in the Balkans, supplemented by country-specific Bradt guides.
I will be staying in So. England next year & need to fly to Belgrade. Are there any flights from So England or do I need to go to Heathrow?? Thanks
Heathrow is in the South of England so it shouldn't be a problem.
The only other airport with flights to Belgrade is Gatwick, also in South England.
www,opodo.co.uk or www.expedia.co.uk will show your options.
julia_t Thank you so much. We will be in Lymington & the map looks like Gatwick is closer than Heathrow. I'll just have to figure the transport to Gatwick.
I just went on site. They said no flights between either Gatwick or Heathrow to Belgrade.
We will bb meeting up with friends on this trip who live in Plymouth-maybe I'll see if they can help out. Many thanks though
According to whichbudget.com Jat Airlines flies direct Gatwick to Belgrade, and a number of airlines fly non-direct. The other places to look are skyscanner.net and amadeus.net. I would never rely on expedia for second tier airlines or airports in Europe.
Well, on the opodo website there are 9 pages of possible flight options from London airports - including Stansted.
However as thursdaysd points out, only JAT fly direct.
JAT fly direct to Belgrade from Heathrow with prices starting around £150.
I didn't post the website correctly above, it should be www.opodo.co.uk
You can also fly to Belgrade direct from Luton Airport, via Wizzair. They are a budget airline.
www.wizzair.com
Getting to Heathrow is no big deal - National Express run coaches from hundreds of towns and cities - including Lymington.

Thank you all. After I wrote I looked on cheaopo air & found a few flights.
I am so looking forward to our visit to Serbia next year. there doesn't seem to be as much activity on this site as other countries.
We will have to get a hotel on night we arrive in Belgrade & the next day pick up a rental car & drive to Zlatabor where we have a weeks timeshare.
This trip isn't till August of 2014 so I have lots of time to research. Thanks again Chris
