All these diet and food related posts have really made me hungry and I keep thinking about some of the delicious sweets I've had in Europe....for instance, there was this lovely, extra-rich chocolate gateaux from the dessert trolley at the Atholl Palace in Pitlochry, Scotland that was drenched in heavy cream..mmmmm...and in Cologne, a corner bakery sold out-of-this-world angel wings..fried dough thickly covered in powdered sugar ( I went there every day and bought more..best I ever had!)....and the fabulous strawberry-raspberry pavlova in Wexford, Ireland was to die for...it was the first time I had ever had pavlova....and I can't stop thinking about the hot chocolate from Angelina's in Paris or the creamy banana-rum gelato from a little shop on the main street in Taormino... or the best in the world bread pudding that was covered with this incredible, rich vanilla sauce my brother had (and shared with me) in Betws-y-Coed from a pub right there by the water .....so many wonderful treats! <BR> <BR>What sweets do you remember most from your trips, and can you remember the name of the establishment where you bought them?

There is a wonderful restaurant in Bordeaux called Chez Philippe and they made a delicious apple tarte, just sweet enough to be perfect. I also stayed in a B&B in Peebles, Scotland, where I was served what they called "Beggarman" which was a fabulous sort of bread pudding, but more like a souffle. I would go back just to have that dessert--it was that good.

Two words - Creme brulee! Anywhere in France, but I remember a particularly good one, flavored with orange rind at a little hotel in Saint Amand Montrond (in the middle of nowhere) where we broke our trip from Normandy to Provence. Delicieux!!

Mmmm...profiteroles drizzled in chocolate sauce at Le Zinc in Paris. Chocolate and banana crepes from the neighborhood crepe shop. <BR> <BR>There's a dessert here in NYC that is to-die-for that I just have to mention even if it's not from one of my trips: chocolate chip bread pudding smothered in fudge sauce topped with two scoops of vanilla ice cream from Blue Ribbon Bakery. <BR> <BR>I think there's a theme here...I love chocolate!

The extravagantly wonderful millefeuille from a tiny little bakery in Aix-en-Provence, the tarte-tatins from any little patisserie in Tours, and the Paris-Brest from a little patisserie on the Rue de Buci whose name I wish I could remember. On my recent trip to Napoli, I was introduced to the vero sfogliatelle pastry (as opposed to the stale (more than 2 hours old) ones you can buy in any Italian bakery in NYC) which must be served and eaten warm--oh my god--they are to die for!

Laura.. if I gain 5 lbs. just reading this the blame falls on you!!!!! <BR> <BR>Now then, the most wonderful light bread pudding , creamy and delicious, at the Merchant House in Ludlow, shropshire. My husband ate 2 servings!Then the vacherin at Rotis.D'un Face on Rue Christine in Paris, crisp meringue , filled with a creamy custrd, drizzled with a caramel sauce, worth the fare to Paris. The Crepes Montepeliano, crepes filled with cream and ricotta, sprinkled with crushed Amoratti, and doused in Tia Maria , at Montepeliano in London.. a bowl of fresh figs , served with a bowl of ice water to cool them down at some little trattoria in rome on a warm day, juice just ran down my chin! <BR> A flourless chocolate torte at Cibreo in Florence, like chocoholics dream! <BR> <BR>When I'm feeling virtuous ,a glass of Vin santo and some cantuccini , just about anywhere in Italy. <BR> <BR>I almost forgot those lemon tarts, at any Parisian bakery....Thank god October is not far away and I can have some again.

Belgium waffles w/ vanilla ice cream, fresh strawberries and drizzled in Belguim chocolate....I ate 3 of these in 2 days in Bruges last month. Should walk these off my hips by December with any luck. But they are all I've dreamt about since July!! mmmmmmmm mmmmm
