You're scaring me...trip to Capri and getting seasick!!
I wanted to spend a night or two on Capri and reading all the posts about getting seasick is making me nervous about it. Just how bad is it ...would you recommend taking something beforehand? We'll be there towards the middle/end of June. Many of you also state the buses are hot...are they not airconditioned or is it because they're so crowded? Thanks.

We took the ferry to Capri and it was comfortable and we didn't experience any motion sickness. However, when we toured the blue grotto and sat in the row boats for about an hour waitin to climb into the smaller boats to enter the grotto - queasiness set in at that point. Both my daughter and I felt a bit icky during the wait. Unfortunately, several people were really sick waiting. I'd give visiting the Blue Grotto a second thought if you have any motion sickness issues. But as for visiting Capri...you must- it is gorgeous.

I'm pretty susceptible to sea sickness on those types of ferry boats and I was fine. It's such a short ride (not even 20 minutes). Don't worry about it. Certainly don't let it stop you from seeing Capri. Besides, if it does happen to make you sea sick, you'll be in Capri for a couple of days - it's not like you'll have to jump right back on the ferry in a few hours for the return trip.

I can sometimes get a bit queasy on smaller boats and I did certainly in Cancun this last summer while out on the open ocean on a small boat. A couple of us stayed on the boat while the others went scuba diving and that was not fun. But I was in Capri in June about five years ago. I don't recall any problems on the ferry over, but I try to stay up on top in the open air with the wind blowing in my face. And like CheBird says, its a short ride. And I had absolutely no problems going to see the Blue Grotto...and would highly recommend it! That is a smaller boat, but so much is going on with all the other small boats and people around, and so much anticipation of when my turn was coming up that I didn't have time to get sick. And perhaps it also has something to do with whether or not the water is rough or not. I have read others posts where the boats were sloshing around when they went to the Blue Grotto. But when we went, it was a nice beautiful day and the waters were reasonable calm. Georgous pictures!!

My wife is prone to motion-sickness but had no problem when we went by ferry from Positano to Capri and, 2 days later, from Capri to Naples. And we spent half the trip inside the rather large cabin (until I told her I wanted the wind in my poor excuse for hair).
Do the ferry thing, or find some other way of getting to Capri.

There are ferries and hydofoils that go to Capri - the hydrafoils are faster and more expensive and ENCLOSED - take a ferry if you are concerned about getting seasick. But go! it is wonderful, even if you decide not to go to the Blue Grotto.

Capri is in the Med - which is generally very quiet (not like the Atlantic or Pacific) but - even so - there are some days when it may be a little rough (esp in the winter).
However - it's not the Bermuda Triangle. If you get seasick at all - or only in rough water - that's what will happen on the trip to Capri. Surely you know if you're subject to motion sickness or not (have you been sick before on boats, planes etc)?

The ferry to capri was fine. Wouldnt have missed our trip there for anything.
But while we're on the subject...didnt anyone else think the Blue Grotto was lame? The least memorable part about our trip to capri, but the most overpriced.

I have read where other people thought it was lame and others have absolutely loved it. I was one who loved it, I thought it was both beautiful and fascinating. But then I was on a 3 week romantic trip to France and Italy with my husband and NO kids!!

I actually had a really bad experience on the hydrofoil from Sorrento to Ischia, but a fine ride from Sorrento to Capri. It really depends on sea at the time. I would NEVER recommend skipping Capri though, it is amazing, the sea-sickness is worth the amazing views. Bring medicine and you'll be fine.
Also- the Blue Grotto is amazing. I never expected how beautiful it would be. Our guide sang Italian songs to us while in the Blue Grotto- worth the money, worth the sea-sickness!

If you are concerned, why don't you just take some Dramamine, to be on the safe side? It works like a charm for me. I have gotten a little seasick on a couple ferries and larger boats at times, as well as on some flights that were very turbulent, so just take Dramamine.

Hi cherylforeurope, I can get a bit seasick but the only time I got feeling terrible was on a hdryofoil from Naples to Capri. The sea was rough. I would have been alright except for the fact that several passengers got real sick including some Italians. That got me feeling terrible but I made it to Capri without getting sick (thank heavens).
I have never taken anything for seasickness. You didn't state that you get seasick easy so unless the sea is really choppy I would think you would be just fine.
Took the busses from Anacapri to Capri every evening and never once felt ill..in fact the views are fantastic. And I am one that is not especially fond of windy mountain roads with cliffs, but I really enjoyed the bus rides both ways. Have a wonderful time on beautiful Capri!

I get motion sickness on some smaller craft. On one trip to Capri we took the ferry and I sat upstairs outside in the fresh air and I was okay. If I can breathe fresh air I'm okay.
But like suec1 said, in the HYDROFOIL...on another trip to Capri...we sat downstairs where it is all ENCLOSED....and the hydrofoil goes so fast we were bouncing up and down on the waves. It was very stuffy inside...at least to me...and all the big bouncing....
Well...I couldn't wait for the trip to be over. I barely made it off the boat. I purposely did not eat breakfast that morning and it's a good thing.
For myself, I would never do another hydrofoil. But a ferry is okay.

We took the hydrofoil in April, 2003 from Naples to Capri and the sea was very rough. We were not out but about 10 minutes and the crew started to hand out seasick bags. There was a huge group of Japanese tourist on board and they started to throw up everywhere. My husband and I went to the back of the boat and stood out on the deck. It was not pretty. We stayed in Capri for a couple of days and took the ferry to Sorrento, to Amalfi etc. and the trip was smooth. Take medication that will not make you sleepy and I am sure you will be ok.

While my son and I are the hardy sailor types, braving the blue Pacific we stomachs of steel, my husband is the going down the gang plank barfer in our group. He had no trouble along the Amalfi coast: not the ferry from Salerno to Positano, or the small boat ride we took along the coast, or the ferry to Capri, or the boat ride around Capri. Maybe it's just the blue Pacific, which we live next to, that does him in. Perhaps it was the timing (end of June)when we made that trip. Or perhaps he lived by his golden rule on the ferries and hydrofoil: don't look out the window. The hydrofoil from Capril to Sorrento was air-conditioned. The other boats were not.
Going into the Blue Grotto was not a problem either -- he swam in, and we took the bus one early morning from Capri to Anacapri, ran down to the sea and jumped on the first boat into the Grotto of the day (they start at 9 a.m.). No sitting, no waiting, no problem.

I, too, have to breathe the fresh air on small boats so I stand in the front outside so I dont get diesel fumes. I also learned to look at the steady horizon and concentrate on it if I start to feel queezy.
I also pretend to steer the boat in my mind so that gives me a feeling of control and it works.
When the buses are hot and stuffy just open a window and breathe in the air. I couldn't get to a window one time on a hot day on the AC and I felt like I was inside a steam room on wheels and I got a little woozy.
Have fun on Capri, my favorite island!
