I can't remember the name but it was a small folding bike. I'm a 5 foot 2 1/2 inch woman so it was perfect for me to replace my Graziella Italian bike that was stolen from me. This bike cost I think almost $400 so buying it with postage was out of the question. Maybe take a trip here and buy it and take it back with you. We couldn't carry the one I liked tho they said they could package it because I was in an arm cast and lugguge to deal with.

Hi salsa,
The bike is made by the huffy company.
Here is a link to their retail pages.

perhaps you can find a retailer in France.

salsagirlnearparis - If you like, I would be happy to purchase it here, have it sent to me and then forward it to you through the US Postal System. According to the Walmart website, the shipping weight is 19 pounds. The cost to have it shipped to me and then forwarded to you would be $43.51 (insured) plus the cost of the bike. That shipping is for surface and says it will take 4-6 weeks, which should leave lots of time before Christmas. I will be in Germany in September, so you could just send me the euros in return. Let me know if you would like me to do this. We lived in Germany for several years and I remember some of the problems I had getting special things from the States for our son.

Linda, I spoke with salsagirl last night and agreed to deliver the bike to her in Paris when I go in October.
However, a call to my airline has disclosed I would be charged an additional $60 at check-in for transporting the bike on the plane.
I've relayed that info to salsagirl in case she did not want to pay that much on top of the cost of the bike.
Your idea, however, makes much more sense, both in cost and ease of delivery. (I had visions of myself wrestling an unwieldy cardboard box through the airports along with my suitcase and carry-on!)
But, I was very willing to help salsagirl out with getting her little girl exactly the bike she wants for Christmas. As a mother and grandmother, I am a veteran of prolonged hunts for just the right gift.
Even though I insisted she needn't repay me in any way, with the offer of a stay in her flat, a ride from the airport, or anything else, salsagirl genuinely wanted to do me a kindness in return. She sounds like a lovely person and caring parent.

Croque_Madame did your airline know the bike would be disassembled?
When I checked Wal-Mart's web site it says the box is 25x35x19 inches with a weight of 19lbs. This is smaller than many a suitcase I've seen checked on an airline and much, much lighter. I figured it could be another piece of checked baggage, not checked as a full-sized bicycle.
Just a thought.

The plan to hand deliver may be the best. There was an article recently that the USPS was discontinuing its use of a very unsatisfactory system of delivering mail to France--delays of years have been reported.

It's not just France for which there was a very unsatisfactory arrangement for delivery of packages from the U.S.--most of western Europe was included. We were lucky to have packages delayed no more than 6 months, but often the recipients of gifts were charged a not unsubstantial fee to claim their packages. The USPS refused to provide information on the system and did not respond to my queries at all.

Wow! This is getting complicated, but come heck or high water, we're going to get this little girl her Dora The Explorer bike for Christmas! As another last option, I could take the bike with me to Germany in Sept. and then mail it to her from there
