Yorkshire: Nantwich to Burnsall, back to MAN
We are visiting friends in Audlem, south of Nantwich, Cheshire, for several days in late June, after a transatlantic crossing on the QM2. We will then drive to Burnsall, near Bolton Abbey to stay at The Devonshire Fell, with other friends, on June 28. We then have two nights and will probably spend one of them at Manchester Airport, as we have a very early morning flight back to JFK on Sunday morning, July 1.
Would love to have a stop in a pretty village on the way back. We have been in the area generally, but many many years ago, and I can't even remember much about where we stayed.
Does anyone have ideas of routes, towns, restaurants, etc.? I've been checking the various threads, and found some ideas. Sounds like "Morgana" is an expert who lives in the area. Hope s/he is reading this!

Since you have called on Morgana, I think I will leave it at that.
If there was no Morgana around, and I was doing this drive, I would be looking at one of the towns or villages in Pendleside, Lancs. Because I find the story of the Pendle witches fascinating, and it has been a number of years since I have had a pint of Pendle Witches Brew.

Thanks, ron, i'm happy to get advice from any and all! I think I may have heard of the area you are talking about. Are there caves around there also?
Not a beer drinker, but I have been called a witch! (kidding, I hope!)

The pressure!
Are you looking for somehwere to stay between Burnsall and the airport? Or a driving route back? Burnsall is lovely and I'd stay there as long as I could! It features in the film Calendar Girls (although it's called something else in the film).
Bolton Abbey is lovely although the car parks are very expensive and it gets busy on sunny weekends.
You are within easy reach of Stump Cross Caverns.

If you are looking for an overnight stop then Ron's suggestion of the Pendle area is a good one. The Trough of Bowland is a beautiful part of the country and very overlooked as people head to the Dales or Lakes.
The Inn at Whitewell is a lovely place to stay overnight and does very good food. It's set in very 'English' countryside - cows grazing, pastures, a winding river etc.

It would be a bit of a drive but White Scar Cave is also a possibility to visit.

Please come back with any questions.

Oh, Morgana: You are a love! So sorry for the pressure. Fame can be taxing!
Yes, looking for a place to stay after Burnsall, don't think we can stay there two nights, as we have a res. at The Devonshire Fell, and I gather they book up very early. I could try, or stay elsewhere in town. Or come down to Bowland area.
Funnily enough, we have been in parts of the area before, when a young friend took us on a day's driving trip, but I think it must be almost 30 years ago!!
I remember the Bowland area as being very beautiful. Do I remember a small village or town by the same name? With lots of brick houses, and an uphill street? (my memories come back in odd ways) I do remember thinking I'd like to come back to stay....
We had lunch at the Inn at Whitewell on that auspicious day, and I remember buying a very beautiful antique ring with tiny pearls and sapphires, in a small shop along the route. It was Hallmarked Cheshire gold, and I wear it every single day!
So Inn at Whitewell might be a great idea!
Many thanks for any other thoughts.
Also looking for a good route back to Manchester airport on the 30th, and I think we'll stay at the airport, which we have done before, since our flight is so early.
Another question, re: CAVES: Our son lived in London for a while in the early 2000's and went to a wedding in a cave up there somewhere, so do any of those caves mentioned do weddings? (dumb question?)

Haven't heard of any weddings in caves - but it wouldn't surprise me if they did take place.
The Tempest is another lovely place to stay.

I think the place you are recalling in Bowland is called Bolton-By-Bowland.
