York (UK) railway station to Herz depot on foot
In a few weeks time I will be travelling by train to York from London and collecting a car from the Herz depot in Leeman Road when I arrive. I am looking for the quickest way of getting from the station to the depot on foot.
There does appear to be a footpath that one can access from the station by crossing the footbridge over the railway tracks (exiting the back of the station). However, it appears to lead to the railway museum. Does anyone know if it is possible to reach Leeman Road this way without having to pay an entrance fee to the museum?
Many thanks

bilboburgler: Thanks for the fee info
Tulips and tuscanlifeedit: How recently were you there? I have done a lot of research on Herz in York and they no longer have any presence whatsoever at the station (they closed that office). You are required to pick up and drop off your car at the Leeman Road depot, some distance away. They do not provide a pickup or drop-off service at the station.
I suspect that most renters take a taxi from outside the main entrance to the station to get to the depot but I am hoping that the walking shortcut over the bridge is doable. I just need confirmation of that.

York Railway Museum is not part of York Train Station, the two are separate and you have to cross at least one road even if you take the signposted route to the museum

dotheboyshall: You are so right I read a series of very recent posts on car hire forums complaining bitterly that they arrived at York station only to find that the Herz office was gone and that they had to find their own way to Leeman Road. I will, of course, check at the station when I get there but I want to be fore-armed with the walking route just in case.
My enquiries on walking route sites have revealed that a walkway does exist BEHIND the station (accessed from the footbridge over the tracks). However, tonight I did further research which indicated that the footbridge from the station provides direct access to the National Railway Museum. Hence my concern over whether or not I will be able to walk right through the museum and exit into Leeman Road.

The footbridge and pathway from the station leads to the railway museum but also to that general area of the city including a car park. You don't have to go into the museum! Its just one of rhe buildings in rhat area However it's great so if you had time ........

Thanks so much, Morgana That is what I was looking for: ie that I can turn off towards Hertz before I get to the museum. In the meantime I have been reading some reviews of the museum itself and it sounds like a great place. I will have to try to fit that in

As Morgana wrote:
You take the footbridge and follow the signs to the Railway Museum.
But once you left the station area you hit Leeman Road.
You cross it to get into the Railway Museum's complex (highly recommended, by the way).
Or you make a left on Leeman Rd and walk to wherever Hertz is located.
You can also use Google Streetview to familiarize yourself with the situation.

I last rented a car there in January. I've also rented from another company, can't remember which now, that was just a very short walk away (to the right, coming out of the station). Hertz must have closed since late January then.

Tulips: Yes, I get the impression that the closure is indeed very recent; maybe within the last couple of months. I think Europecar also has an office at the station. The depot in Leeman Road is so new that it doesn't even appear in Google Streetview. I went up and down Leeman Road a couple of times but did not see it. I have written to Hertz asking them to give me a clue as to how far up Leeman Road from the station the depot is. I suspect that it is opposite the National Railway Museum but I can't be sure. Studying all those maps has at least given me a viable route from the depot to the A59 and onward to the Yorkshire Dales

Hi and thanks, Mimar
As I understand it, a UK postal code covers a fairly large area. Since I'll be walking, I need pinpoint accuracy (the depot is brand new and does not appear on any maps yet and Leeman Road is rather long).
Fortunately, Hertz of York responded to an email that I sent them and told me that their Leeman Road depot is 400 yards beyond the National Railway Museum on the same side of the road as the museum and is easily visible. Now I can plan to use the footbridge over Leeman Road at the junction of Leeman Road and Cinder Lane and then walk up Leeman Road until I find it.
Many thanks to everyone who responded to this thread
