York, UK accommodations
Hi
I need some help finding a place to stay in York. We aren't that picky, but I do have a few needs, and I'm having trouble finding anything that fits. I've written to some B&Bs but haven't found available rooms for our two nights, Monday and Tuesday, May 23 and 24. I wouldn't have thought it but the best B&Bs seem to all be booked.
I can easily do a flight or even two of stairs, but not more. I need a shower, and don't mind it it's over a tub. I don't want to have to walk a mile to get to the center; staying close to or in the center was why I was looking in York itself in the first place. I would like to be able to have coffee after 9 AM.
A big issue is price. My money is rubbish compared to the £, and under 95 £ for two would be pushing it. What I'm finding at those prices doesn't appear too comfortable, or else doesn't appear to be central.
Now I wondering if staying in a nearby small town with a good train link into York would work for us.
I would appreciate thoughts on either reasonable places to stay in York, or staying somewhere else with cheaper rooms and a good rail link. I'm feeling stymied.
Thanks.

Well, by all means explore Knaresborough, Northallerton, Malton and Harrogate, which are all handsome and one station away from York. No idea about hotels, but check train frequency at www.nationalrail.co.uk
But what's the thing about trains? York's not the public transport desert most of Tuscany's turned into. There's a perfectly good, very frequent, bus system from the outlying smaller villages, all a great deal nearer than the towns served by trains, that operates from early morning to after pub chucking out time.
Start with Middlethorpe and Bishopsthorpe, for example.

We were in Leeds for a party and visited York as a very easy inexpensive ( 6gbp, I believe) daytrip. We won the Marriott Leeds for $49 bidding on www.Priceline.com.
I see there is also a Marriott that is sometimes won in York. Give it a try after you read up on how to do this non-refundable bidding reservation. I would not go under 4*.
At Hotwire.com I see a 4* for your dates that has a 4/5 trip advisor rating. You know that it is a well-liked hotel at least, probably not much more than a B+B. However, you will not know the name of the hotel until you buy it, but it is $112 plus tax and fees.
If you bid on Priceline, start low and slowly go up every day as you have plenty of time to do this.
Good luck. I am sure you will find something very acceptable.

We stayed at 23 St. Marys B&B, it was nice, but does have stairs and parking available, within walking distance to city center.

flanneruk: I don't have a thing for trains. I have just been looking at a lot of maps and see that the train station in York is central, and didn't think about busses because I heard negative things about traffic.
lincasanova: I'm an old hand at Priceline and Hotwire, but when checking the lists for both on betterbidding.com, there didn't seem to be anything that was rated high on tripadvisor, where I go to cross check. I will certainly look again and investigage further.
Sue: I will check on 23 St Mary's.

lincasanova, I'm back from checking the forums that apply, and also Hotwire.com. It appears to me that the Hotwire area for York is anywhere within the entire ring road. Am I seeing something different than you?

Having done a few UK cities, I have found that a good way to do this sort of thing is using the TRAVELODGE chain of hotels. They are all much the same: boring. BUT they are cheap, clean, have good access etc. I suspect they will cater for all your needs. York Central is advertising £58.75 per night for a two bed room. 6 miles along the road (a short bus ride) you can stay at York Tadcaster hotel for £29 per night. You don't get any frills (maybe a kettle and coffee etc) but at least you know what you are getting....

We liked Number 34 in York. There were stairs. Less than half a mile to walls; a little over half mile to Minster.
We had a room (2 actually, a sort of suite) for 3 of us for under 100 pounds, so not sure what rate for you will be. Stayed one night in August. Would go again.

This is a bit further out but if you are considering taking a train in it might be just as cheap. The Bloomsbory B+B has one long flight of stairs but also a nice ground floor room. The B+B is about a 15 min walk to town and we are slow walkers. It's about 80 pounds/night for 2 and even if you took taxis there and back to the center it's no more than 7-8 pounds. We've been to York a few times and this is the only place we stay anymore....I personally don't like staying right in town.

We stayed at the Four Seasons (no relation whatever to the hotel chain) in York, but you may have already checked that one. We had a very pleasant stay in this modest B&B and the proprietors were delightfully friendly.

Oh Mohun, the Four Seasons is one that was full. I really sort of liked the looks of it.
mytery, I will look again at the Bloomsbury, but I've been rejecting most things that aren't in the very center. We will be in England for 13 nights, the first two in York. I think that coming off a long flight from the US, and maybe not getting another chance to see York, I'm still trying for the center.

I do hope you find something in York.
I'd be very wary of staying as far out as Knaresborough or Harrogate as someone has suggested - it might look a simple journey on the train but twice a day this route is currently suffering from severely overcrowded trains. (I live in Harrogate and it's a very hot topic locally with commuters going to York as they have no seats, can barely even get into the carriages etc.). During the day it's fine, and also at weekends, but up until around 9.30am, or later in the afternoons on a weekday it is a nightmare.

I stayed with my parents at the Dean Court Hotel several years ago. The location is great, very near the Minster and near to one of the sets of stairs to access the city wall. It is now a Best Western. A very quick check showed rates starting at 90 quid. I don't remember the shower set-up. Pub/restaurant on the ground floor. Am certain there was an elevator, my mom didn't do stairs at all at that point.

I would have loved the Dean Court, but the cheapest I can find there is a double "small room" for 128£.
I'm definitely staying in York. I've got two "yes" rooms, and just need to decide which. visityork.org is proving helpful, because they show what's available.
Thanks.
