Wrong name on Trenitalia ticket. Please help!

Hello,I've bought two tickets from Milano to Wien on 18/09/2012 on the trenitalia website, one for myself and one for my friend.

However, I made a mistake that one of the ticket holder is wrong. Both of the two tickets reservation email showed that the ticket holder is me. Is there any one knows that can I change it? Will there be a name on the night train ticket?

I've tried to change my reservation online and I need the PNR and CP to log in the website. The PNR was in the email but the CP was not. I am not sure how to go about changing it since I do not have the CP code. Can anyone please help me? Thanks so much in advance!

I don't recall having to show ID to board a train in Italy (several years ago, so things may have changed), so the name on the ticket may not matter at all. And Italy to Austria is within Schengen, so there should be no immigration check to worry about either.

we're talking about italy. anyway, I suspect that all tickets will have had the same name, no matter how many you bought - was there a prompt for you to put in the name of any "fellow travellers"? no? then they don't care.

I haven't been on a train in Italy, but in any other country, your ticket is rarely checked to board a train (barring unusual security measures, which happened once to me after a bombing on a train from Madrid), so that fact wouldn't be surprising.

Every other train in the world I've been on, they check your ticket on the train during the ride, that is what the job of conductor does. And that is when they would ask for ID to match the name if it were the kind of ticket that is actually for a specific person. Many discount tickets are (probably most) as they don't want people buying them at a discount and then reselling them to make a profit. That is the way it works for any train ticket that involves a large discount due to buying it early.

So that is the question. If it is a discount ticket specific to one person then they could ask for ID. The very fact that the OP says the email referred to the name of a ticket holder sounds suspect to me. I believe the Trenitalia site does ask you for a list of passengers when you are buying tickets.

this is what the site says
<<TICKET ISSUING
The ticket issuing of Italian Eurostar, Intercity and Intercity Plus trains takes place on board the train. The staff on board will issue the Ticketless ticket without requiring payment after checking the PNR stated by the customer with their list of expected passengers.
Should the customer have lost or forgotten the PNR number but be able to provide proof of identity (using a valid piece of identification) that corresponds with the details on the list, the staff on board may decide that the conditions exist for the issuing of the ticket and thus proceed with the Ticketless issuing (without payment request).

Under all other circumstances, the customer will have to pay for the ticket and the extra charge foreseen.
In this case, the customer may request a full refund from the Call Center phone reservations service, and the cost of the ticket purchased on-line will be credited back onto the relative credit card.>>

I've taken the train recently inside of Italy (Florence to Rome) and used the Trenalia website for my tickets. We didn't have to show ID at all. I don't think they care.

You'll be fine. I just checked my confirmation emails from Trenitalia for the trip I took with a friend last May. I bought all our pre-purchased tickets and don't see my friend's name mentioned anywhere in any of the emails or receipts. They do usually come by and ask for your ticket, but as long as the number of passengers matches the number of tickets (or number of people listed on your confirmation), I think you'll be just fine. No one on the train within Italy ever asked for our ID.

If it's a day time ticket, they won't check names when they come around. If it's overnight, they will ask for passports, but I really doubt they will care about a name difference.

We just got back from Italy, and took the trains 4 times. Our tickets were checked twice, and we did have each passenger's name because I had purchased them online from home. The website had assigned our seats to two different people. Luckily it was first class, and there were enough seats that everyone could be accommodated. The conductor did make some phone calls about it but all was well. I don't think she really cared as long as we had tickets.

On another ride, no one even came through to check our tickets. I think you'll be fine, as long as you have tickets. If anyone should question you, just explain the situation and I think they won't care a bit. They must see things like this often, with their confusing website!

I have led groups on more than 500 train rides in Europe and not once did the conductor ever ask for an ID to prove any names. The only time you need to be sure your name is correct is when you are using a rail pass that needs validating at the station ticket window -- they do want to see your passport and usually check spelling. Depending on the clerk, if there is an error they might be able to re-issue the pass for you, or ignore it.

Hi Dennis~ The problem is that my friend and I will both use our rail pass, and the ticket is for the night train. That's why we need to book online and pay the additional fee.

I cannot find the email address of the train company to ask them about this problem. Our seats are one beside another(65 and 66). Do you think is it possible to explain the situation as we already have two tickets although the names of the ticket holder are the same?

surely even an italian ticket inspector will be able to work out that you didn't book both of them for yourself!

the reason there's nothing on the website is, i suspect, that there is no problem.
