I am looking to book a package in July and googled the hotel. It does not have a/c. Have never been to Amsterdam and am not familiar with the climate.

I know temperatures can vary from year to year. For example, in Prague in July 2005, the temps were in the low 70's during the day, and I wore a jacket. In Prague in July 2006, I wore sleeveless tops, and it was hot!

Stayed in a non air-conditioned Salzburg hotel in July 2006 and was most uncomfortable at night, even though the hotel provided a small osciallating fan.

Does anyone have experience with no a/c in Amsterdam in the summer?

Better to have and not use, then be uncomfortable or wake up in a sweat feeling you're in a sauna.

3 years ago I was in Amsterdam in July and it was rather cool - one needed a blanket , but as someone said, it is better to have AC(even if you don't use it).

yes, I've been in Amsterdam in July with no AC, and it wasn't hot at all. You are just going to get random anecdotes of a few days in anyone's experience, I think you should go with the averages.

If you would be very uncomfortable in a room without AC, why not just look for hotels with AC?

It just depends on your tolerance for heat. I always get A/C in the summer when I can--I suffer horribly in hot weather. If it doesn't get hot, then I'm out a few bucks. If it does, then my vacation isn't spoiled.

Had a horrible time in Germany a few years ago when temps soared into the high 90s--couldn't sleep, couldn't eat much. I just wanted to get into the A/C car and drive.

My body just does not handle heat well--I thrive in the winter; the colder the better (well, within reason). Mrs. Fly doesn't suffer like I do, but she has trouble sleeping in the heat and then she gets really grouchy the next day. I'm sick and she's grouchy--not the best recipe for a fun vacation.

Summer last year was cool and wet, then very hor and humid in July and back to cooler and wetter again in August. There is absolutely no way of knowing what the weather will do this year, but I would choose a room with A/C just to be on the safe side - last summer when it got hot it was hot all night too, and as I said very humid, so very uncomfortable.

For me it's not about the humidity or the mosquitos (really?), it's about potential noise. In summer with no air-con, you'd have to leave the windows open to be comfortable. If there's any street noise (which likely there could be) that's what would get to me (I often use AC as white noise not for cooling necessarily).

After two summer trips there I never felt like I needed AC (I'm from Florida).

suze, Thanks for reminding me about the street noise. I experienced that in Salzburg but forgot about it! I guess I just remembered how *#&!% HOT I was that I fogot about that annoyance.
