Would you send your mother to Romania?

My mother and sister have plans to travel to Romania at the end of May. Originally, this was to be a business trip, but now they plan to travel there for a week. I am concerned about the region and worry about their safety. However, I do not want to unneccesarily frighten them. Do you think the area is safe for travel? They will be staying with local friends and in hotels. I have already urged them to always stay with a guide. Is this cautious enough or should they reconsider going at all?

I went to Romania quite a while ago (under Communism). I stayed in Bucharest, Suceava (near the painted monasteries), Cluj and Oradea, near the hungarian border. There are other interesting things to see. I don't see why someone should be discouraged from going there and need a guide at every step. I found the people friendly and the atrwork and crafts very interesting.
The food was good. They are a major wine producer. They are very proud of their latin heritage.

Great country!!!
My husband and I went there Aug1996.
Romania is the definitly best country that I' ve ever traveled.
People are very friendly and during our stay we were invited to visit locals.
Monastery are wonderful. Food are delicious. Music ( specially in Clejani) are magic.
It can compensate poor and expensive tourist infrustracture such as hotel.

My mother-in-law was born in Romania and I and my husband would *love* to send her back permanently, but I doubt Romania would take her. I think the whole country breathed a sigh of relief when she departed back in 1945.
