would like to rent cottage in South West France
We are going "barging" in SW France next year-May-and would also like to spend some time in a beautiful village/town, where we can go to the local markets, enjoy gorgeous restaurants etc. Could anyone reccommend anything?

We just spent a week outside Vence in a delightful little house on the owner's property. It was recommende in Alistair Sawday's book. You need a car because it is 3 km. from town. the website is: www.luxomedia.com/clients/Maison Laurence. The price was 300E for a week at this season.

This September we rented three gîtes in
SW France: one near Castelnau de Montmiral in Lot et Garonne; the second
in Salignac near Sarlat and the third
in Caluzet, also near Sarlat. I booked
the first two from information on the
French Connections website and both
were exactly as described; our friends
had booked the third on the net and we
joined them - this gîte was exquisite!
The first two were around 330€/wk and
the last a little more. There are lots
of gîtes in SW France and you shouldn't
have any problem getting exactly what
you want/need if you book early enough.
Beautiful villages/towns abound - it's
hard not to land in a fairytale place
and if you like duck, duck and duck
you'll have no problem finding great
restaurants <g>!

The one near Castelnau-de-M was in a
tiny almost deserted village backing
onto the Fôret de Gresigne and had
great hiking; only two eating places
in the hameau - one open for lunch &
the other only on weekends when the
owner had a sanglier on hand! Other
than that, no shops or Presse but
close to other slightly larger villages
by car. Gîte itself was nicely reno-ed
with a terrace off the bedroom.
The Salignac place was 12thC with a
view of the castle to die for; also
sympathetically restored and nicely
furnished - all mod.cons.
Les Charmes de Caluzet was a gorgeous
restored mas for a B&B plus a completely
rebuilt grange with three rooms and a
huge reception floor with a kitchen I'd
love to have in my own home....a private
pool and a huge garden. Again, very
rural; Salignac has a shop, resto and
a pizza/bar open on the weekend so
driving further afield is a necessary
pleasure. The towns around that area
are especially beautiful, sigh, and
wonderful to explore. I adore the
area around Bédoin but I've fallen in
love with SW France!!

thankyou for all your replies-we are quite relaxed about where we stay-have all been to France before and are happy to find some special village/cottage that will delight us!
We have stayed in Brantomme, a few years ago and loved itso if anyone has had recent experience of accommodation etc. would be MOST interested!

We were in a villa in Le Coux et Bigaroque about 45 minutes from Sarlat. It was a 17th century farm house, restored, with two bedrooms and a private pool. We were there this past September. It was 900E and we rented it from a New Zealand couple who are living in the Dordogne area. We had a car and went to many of the markets, all within 1/2 hour...Belves, Domme, St.Cyprien and visited two of the caves, Font de Gaume and Peche Merle. It was very central and very lovely.
