Women tourists safety and smartphone map question
'm told told physical/violent attacks againt women toruist is quite rare in Spain...is this still the case as of late? Also for anyone who has tavel Spain do you mostly rely on maps or smartphone maps to get you around?

It's quite safe as long as you remain alert. A violent or physical assault is highly unusual except in certain locations, the same as you would find anywhere in the world. Gypsies (Barcelona and Madrid) are seldom aggressive, just quick and can be pushy at times. Try to ignore them and move on.
If you're walking about, then I've found the mapping app on the iPhone to be reliable.

Spain is quite safe even for travelling women. You just have to be alert and maybe don't go to an empty alley at night, just to be sure. When walking on the streets what you can have is pickpocketing and for that reason you should keep your belongings safe in zipped pockets.
Regarding the maps, the Google or Apple maps are more than fine, they are well updated to the reality.

Hi Lil, you have posted three questions about safety. While you always have to be aware of your surroundings and take sensible precautions while traveling, you seem to be too worried.
I don't know where you are from, but Spain is not a dangerous place.
I find a paper map easier if I am in a city where I don't know my way - but will use a smartphone map to get from A to B sometimes as well.

All 3 questions that Lil asked were very intelligent, and she got good feedback for having asked the questions. They were all different.
I really wouldn't discourage people from asking questions about their personal safety and their belongings. They are good questions to ask.

Lil,
Feel free to ask whatever you want as often as you want. Spain is not a dangerous country but it has more of problem with street crime than many other European countries, and women traveling without men always benefit from getting tips about how to stay safe. Sad to say, no place on earth is entirely safe for women travelers.

Lil, it just strikes me that your three only questions concern safety. How about restaurants, museums, places to hang out. Spain is generally a lot safer than the US. Of course be aware of your surroundings and don't wander around dark alleys on your own, but I'm sure you know that.
I sometimes see tourists (particularly from the US) who are so worried about being abroad, and so suspicious of everyone they meet, that they forget to enjoy their vacation.
