Winter visit: Kitzbuhel or Arlberb

I want to spend three days in January in either Kitzbuhel or Lech. I am not a skier, but I want to look at mountains, ride to the top of one, visit a village and stay in a four or five star hotel. What do you recommend? Thanks.

Kitzbühel and surroundings have more to do for non-skiers than Lech and the Arlberg region. And Kitzbühel itself is a more interesting town than any town at the Arlberg. On the other hand, the Arlberg is much more snow reliable. And better don't go to Kitzbühel during Hahnenkamm race - terribly crowded then.

Ingo,
Thanks for the advice. I'll check on the dates for the Hahnenkamm.

Ingo if you're still around, I checked on the ski race and I will be there the weekend prior. Do you (or anyone) have any hotel recommendations in Kitzbuhel? I'm looking for a four or five star hotel. Thanks in advance.

You basically cannot go wrong with a four or five star hotel in Kitzbühel. I stayed once in a four star hotel in the outskirts which now only offers breakfast anymore (no restaurant, garni only), so it doesn't get a recommendation.

The other one I stayed at (but some years ago) is Schwarzer Adler. Excellent hotel, big and very good spa. It's quite centrally located, but not right in the middle of the apres-ski region, if you know what I mean. If you want something quieter, check out the hotels at Schwarzsee lake - I think they have shuttles into town.

Frankly, I think hotel rates in Kitzbühel during winter are outrageous. Many people stay in neighbouring towns like Kirchberg or St. Johann and get more value for their money.
