The daily highs will be around freezing (0C or 32F), with lows below -20C or -4F. So probably doesn't sound as harsh as in Winnipeg, but there is still icy blast from Siberia in the East, and insulation and heating aren't as good as in Canada. Road maintenance is also notably poor.
So you will mainly confine yourself to the centre of Krakow and its indoor attractions, such as churches, the castle, museums and galleries.
One day trip that is worth making in the depth of winter is to Auschwitz, about 90 min away. There are numerous tours advertised in the city, but it's quite easy to make your own way by bus from the bus station next to central railway station, which drops you outside Auschwitz I. The harsh winter scene will make even greater impact on visitors, to imagine how inmates had to ensure harsh winter with not much clothing and little heating.

Krakow is cold, don't kid yourself. You won't be sunbathing. Average temps are not too far from what you usually get - sub-freezing but warmer than Manitoba. It's actually further north than Winnipeg.
We were in Krakow in Nov. and we are from western Canada and YES IT IS COLD. In fact I was in Warsaw Oct 9th, this year for 3 days and IT WAS COLD (in fact snow pellets for a few minutes)!!! The cold is different than Winnipeg and/or Calgary, dampness adds to the discomfort.. Layer your clothing, fleece under a jacket/coat, scarves, gloves, sox and boots and windproof, waterproof jacket/coat. Hats are big in Europe this year, classy, colorful and above all warm. They (hats) are also cheaper if you don't have one. But warm layers, especially next to your skin and have a wonderful time. the beauty, history and experience is well worth wnat ever disomfort you may feel. Having said all this it may not be an average winter. Crap shoot all the way...
