Where are some of the best wineries and what cities to stop at driving along the Rhine?

google German Wine Institute in Bernkastle. My husband and I stumbled upon it during a trip to the Rhine/Mosel area a couple of years ago. At that time over 150 wines were available for tasting. We paid something like 10 euros each, received our wine glasses, and spent the afternoon tasting some most delicious white wines. Many were very reasonably priced. Enjoy!

In the Rheingau region, Schloss Vollrads is quite well-known for its dry Rieslings. It is near Oestrich-Winkel and offers a pleasant garden where you can do the wine tasting.

Also in that region, there is Schloss Johannisberg, a little bit further down the river near Geisenberg. Also a very reputable Riesling production and a terrace that overlooks the Rhine Valley.

A little bit closer to Frankfurt, there is Franz Kuenstler in the village of Hochheim, the "entrance" to the Rheingau region.

On the other side of the river, in the Rheinhessen region, there is Weingut Keller in Floersheim-Dalsheim. A winery that has been receiving a couple of rewards. As at all the other wineries mentioned here, the focus is on dry Rieslings, too.

Finally, there are wine tasting stands in a couple of villages along the river that will have a selection of most locally produced wines available. I know of one in Eltville, right on the river by the castle ruin.

Hello Mike: We enjoy the red wines made in Assmannshausen, on the Rhine near Rudesheim. I understand that region is the only red wine producing region (of any note) in Germany. We plan to be there this Fall --again. Good Luck. Gradyghost
