Wine Shipping from Puglia

HELP... my husband did not check baggage restrictions for our flight from Brindisi to Rome after our 2 week trip to Puglia where I hoped to buy up to 12 bottles of wine/olive oil!!! Has anyone shipped this home to the states or shipped to Rome to fly home with us... or I'm thinking of buying him a one way Ryan Air flight back to Rome, it might be cheaper!!

You can usually buy extra kilos of Ryan Air from Ryan Air right up until your check in time. Have you looked on their website for this option to add to your ticket?

Weigh some bottles of wine & olive oil at home, figure out how much more weight you'll need to buy (+packing material), and pay up front online, If you wait until you get to the airport, it will cost a LOT more.

Needless to say, baggage handlers are very rough on checked baggage. Maybe Ryan Air offers special handling for fragile items. Check on their website or call. But I would factor in plenty of excellent packing material.

I'm assuming you are buying from several different vendors. If you plan to make your purchases all in one place, or at the most 2, wait 'til you get to Puglia to see if the vendors routinely ship for customers. It won't be cheap, but it might be cheaper (and less risky) than hauling it yourselves.

Depending where you live, it may not be worth the extra charges by the time you pay the duty and taxes to bring liquor home.

I know different wine cellars or olive-oil producers can ship directly bottles to your address.

On the other site ryanair luggage surcharges are really expensive at check-in desk: just add luggage on their web site.

Furthermore take in account that ryanair is actually cancelling a lot of flights in Europe for internal reasons:

Sundried,

The last time I brought a case of wine home from Italy to the States, I simply checked it as luggage. Upon arrival in the US, I went to declare my case of wine as it was subject to a 10% tax. Customs did not want to do the paperwork and sent me on my way immediately. Don't know if rules have changed but was told they charged the tax based on the receipt you have for the wine. Problem for customs is that Italian merchants I dealt with were happy to provide a receipt for a lower cost. My guess customs is well aware of this and realize the 10% tax really isn't worth the effort.

As to the poster, the wines of Puglia are generally much less expensive than the more recognized vineyards of Italy. Tax in the US shouldn't be much of a consideration under the circumstances.
