Will this plan work

Flying into milan at 1030pm in 5/17/2014.
Then planning to drive to leon france, stay till 19th at friends then drive to geneva, then drive to munich, then through austria and end up in venice for a few days. Spending a day at each till i get to venice then chill and fly back out of milan on the 27th. Ill be alone in rent a car and just want to see different countries quick. This ok or foolish. I get bored really quick, i like to look, get pictures n leave. Any feedback will be good.
Also, flying turkish airlines arriving from los angeles via istanbul, how long will it take to get through customs?

Your flight lands at Malpensa at 10:45p, not 10:30p. The car rental office probably closes at midnight.

Starting with Day 1, do you really intend to drive basically all night by yourself after a crazy-long travel day? It's about a 5-hour drive from Malpensa to Lyon. IMO, that's foolish.

The rest of the trip doesn't appeal to me at all. So much driving, so little time everywhere, but I don't think it rises to foolishness.

That would be way to much driving for me for a 10-day trip. So what you are proposing is that you drive 12 hours from Milan to Leon on the 18th while jetlagged, staying in Leon on the 19th, then drive 8 hours to Geneva on the 20th. Spend the 21st in Geneva, then drive 6.5 hours on the 22nd from Geneva to Munich. Stay in Munich on the 23rd, then drive 7 hours on the 24th from Munich to Venice. Spend the 25th and 26th in Venice, then train to Milan and fly out the 27th.

I am exhausted just typing it.

use www.viamichelin.com to calculate driving time and petrol costs.

How long it takes to get through immigration in any airport is dependent on how many plans land at the same time you do. Impossible to tell.

If the OP actually meant Leon as in Léon, France just south of Bordeaux, that is one long drive especially after flying flying from LA. Whether ok or foolish depends on your objectives. If your objective is to drive in Europe, your plan accomplishes that. I know an acquaintance who travels that way. He drives all day, every day, not stopping or visiting any places except to sleep overnight just to resume driving the next day. His wife hates it, but she has to go along.

That's a LOT of driving. It sounds really bad to me.

And I definitely would not do that first long stretch immediately coming off a flight from west coast US. Have you been to Europe before (experienced the time change and jet lag?) to know how it effects you?

How long it takes to get thru immigration/customs anywhere just depends how many, if any, flights land at the same time yours does.

I suppose you mean Lyon, at least I hope so.

Do you realize how much it's going to cost you to pick up a car in one country and drop it off in another? Probably at least 500 euros extra. Plus the 40-euro vignette for Switzerland, plus all those tolls (because you'll never get a chance to get off the highways) and fuel costs.

Since you asked, yes, I think this is foolish, not to mention frightfully expensive.

Do I get your plan right, especially your flights?

Are you actually planning to fly from (LA to Istanbul to Milan) then rent a car and drive several hours? I do not care if it is Leon or Lyon, that would be crazy and unsafe. Perhaps you are spending some time in Istanbul first, then flying only from Istanbul to Milan. That would not be quite so bad. It is unclear which you are doing, but you said LA to Milan via Istanbul.

You could stay the night in Milan, you won't get to a hotel until after midnight, so would then drive to France on the 18th and begin your loop drive back to Milan on the 19th - not much time in France for such a long drive to get there.

You would depart Venice on the 26th for your flight out of Milan on the 27th.
Given that you want a couple of days to "chill" in Venice, say the 25th and a half day on the 26th, you have a maximum of 5 days for all the rest of your travel and sight seeing.

Have you considered taking the train?

Have you considered flying into France and out of Venice?

I'm impressed. 19 hours of flying followed by 11 hours of driving across France. Is this foolish? It's suicidal.

Question: won't you get bored driving on highways all day? To me that would be very stressful and boring, looking at macadam with some occasional billboards showing national monuments.

It's your trip so do what pleases you but don't expect to see different countries as you won't have any time to do that. I find a highway looks pretty much the same all over. The exception is in Europe the signs will be in the vernacular.

'Will this plan work'.

Yes,it will. Is it a good plan, no it is not. it quite possibly is a contender for worst plan ever devised.
