And while we are at it, who is Betty Fodor, and does she work in some kind of institution? I don't get it. I'd like to get it.

I think Dr. Fordor/Betty is a VERY lonely person. The only thing to do is act outraged, this seems to be what he or she wants. A person with this type of problem has very low self esteem and most likely does not have any friends. Attention is really all he/she is looking for, this is made obvious by the type of posts.

I assumed it was a joke, but I could be wrong.

Hmmm, and I thought I'd missed something too when I started seeing these posts from Dr. Fordor. Guess I wasn't the only one.
Now that I've read several, I've come to some tentative conclusions. I think Betty Fodor and Dr. Fordor are the same person--that she does not work in an institution but pretends to do so in order to make some amusing points. Personally, I don't think she is any of these things: unkind, bored, lonely, of low self esteem, seeking attention, and so on.
Rather, I just thought that she was pretending to be a psuedo-psychiatrist/care giver as a way of gently poking fun at us fodorites when we get carried away.
Most times when I don't understand postings, it's when someone is trying to be humorous or sardonic, and that's hard to do and get your point across.
Case in point, I email almost every day to a friend from college whom I have known for 35 years -- and even as well as we know each other, when we make jokes in emails, sometimes the other one thinks it is a putdown or serious...but then we always write right back and ASK to clarify if the other one was really joking.
Lots of what meaning we humans give in conversation is carried by our voice TONE, and you never get that in an email. Hence, the use of smiley faces...which I now try to put in often when I am joking.
Trouble is, I don't know what to use when I am trying to be mildly sarcastic or to do a play on words.

A pun is a play on words.

You HAVE heard of Betty Ford?

And Fodor's Travel Guides?

She makes me laugh out loud!

More power to your elbow, Betty

To the Curious, Questioning and Discerning Readers:

Dr. Fordor wants you to know that she doesn't work on the weekends, as she has a gruelling work life tending to the addicts here and needs some recovery time herself. So much libido was released on Friday, that it may take her a day or so to get with it again. But in the mean time, she recommends you shut down your computer for a couple of hours, put on your running shoes, roller blades or flippers and get some exercise. Grab a friend, family member(s) or meet a total stranger. If none of the above is available, look in the mirror and smile!

We hope this tides you over.

Regards from the folks at the clinic.

What a way to start a Monday. I have to tell you, I don't specialize in multiple personalities, so I can't tell if xxx has morphed into Cindy at xxx, or if Topper is the same as at the top. So let me begin by commending kk and Sheila and April as being real people. It's wonderful to have their support and April, don't ever take any of this seriously.

Dear xxx:

I have to adjust my glasses because I can't make out your name. My strongest prescription doesn't make it clear to me who you are. Either you are illiterate and were taught to sign your name like that or you are forever kissing. I am concerned about your use of the smaller case "i," and we know that can only mean one thing. I do commend you on posting a question, since this is apparently something you are generally not comfortable with.

Dear A La Prochaine:

For a Frenchman, you have quite the Irish Rogue, but with a name like Prochaine, it seems you suffer from some type of disorder like perseveration. If you add a little motown with your "deux langues, deux langues, deux langues" you could probably get a job as a back up singer for the Supremes.

God bless,

Betty

Heavens to Betty, that was a witty post! I particularly liked this part: "Either you are illiterate and were taught to sign your name like that or you are forever kissing," said when addressing xxx. You may not be a real shrink, Betty, but you sure are clever!

Hi,

Betty, what a funny reply! only thing is, "deux langues" is actually pronounced kind of like "duh long" (sort of - very clipped)...

you had me humming backup though.

Didn't Ronnie Spector (sp?) and her group have a backup sound with that vocal too?

Dearest Betty,

Thank you again for your analysis. I just thought I would mention that I am not xxx. When I am feeling frisky, I sign off as "ooo", pronounced "OOOOOOOOOH".

Answer: A rather bright person who got zapped one of the first times she posted with an outrageously inappropriate, non-P.C. thread heading, though any idiot should have been able to see that she was not a bigot. She took the extremely hostile criticism in stride, assumed the penname (i.e. electronic name) of Dr. Betty, and has had some fun with it. She may be tart, but she's not mean. And she sounds interesting enough to have plenty of friends.

And what is this top business? Why does he/she always say to the top? I don't get it.

Who said "top"? (Not RECENTLY on this thread recently.) I should've said "eureka" because I just figured out who Dr. Betty is, based on some idle browsing of old "gypsy" threads.
Don't think about it too much -- nothing important....

Confused, did you really and truly want to know what "top" means? When someone posts ANY sort of answer to a Q, it goes to the top. If no one answers for a long time, so many other Qs will get ahead of it that it will no longer be in the first page of Qs to scroll through (the top 50), so it may be forgotten forever, unless it comes up as a result of a specific search and the prson who rediscovered it adds a comment or reply. So "topping" a thread is a way of rescuing it from oblivion.
