Whit Monday - Help please!
We will be in Munich from May 21-23. Can anyone tell us if anything in and around Munich will be open Whit Monday, May 22? We were considering going to Andechs Monestary or Herrenchimsee Whit Monday if either is open.
Will any stores, bier gartens or restaurants be open?

Thank you.

HI Scott,
I'm German but I don't know what do you mean with Whit Monday? May 22. is a usual day. We have to work, shops, restaurants and biergardens are open and so on. I'm living in Ingolstadt near Munich. Please mail me if you want to know more. Sorry my English isn't perfect.
Ingrid

Hi Scott,
another German to respond. Whit Monday is on June 12th., May 22th. is a normal day for us-so don`t worry.
For Jim:
Whit Monday is "Pfingsten" in German. It`s an ecclesiastical holiday more for the Catholics than for the Protestants.
Shops will be closed on that day but you`ll have no problems buying things at the airport or at gas-stations, restaurants will be open, too.

Regards

Miriam

What about Whit Monday in Italy? How is it observed? We want to get a train from Venice to Zurich via Milan on this day (12 June) and the train schedule says "no holidays". Does this mean there will not train service available on Whit Monday? I have been unable to find out an answer. We are leaving for our trip on May 27. Can anyone help with an answer to this question?

Kathy, this may not be the definitive answer, but according to my Italy guidebook Whit Monday is not one of the holidays in Italy when shops and offices are closed, so it doesn't sound like a holiday that would disrupt travel.
Perhaps the Italian rail websites would be able to confirm, if you haven't already checked
www.itwg.com/trains/trains.asp
and
www.fs-on-line.com
