While I am in Civitavecchia, Italy
I will be flying in to Rome late afternoon and will be staying the night in Civitavecchia, Italy at a lovely hotel (Hotel Traiano) close by the pier for my cruise the following day. With the few daylight hours I will have left after getting to my hotel, what possible sights could I see that would be worth while? This is my first time to Italy and would enjoy any suggestions.

Do you mean sights in Civitavecchia? There isn't too much to see there unfortunately. I imagine you don't mean to go into Rome right after arriving at FCO and carrying around your luggage while sightseeing. How are you getting from the airport to Civitavecchia? You will need to take a train to Rome's Termini and then another train to Civitavecchia, or have a cab or private driver/shuttle waiting for you at the airport.

Yes, sights in Civitavecchia. The hotel will be picking us up at the airport for a small fee which is nice. I wish I could stay in Rome and sightsee but we are not willing to lug the luggage around with us. We normally do not pack light. Heard of to many horror stories about losing luggage or pickpocketers taking advantage.

I stayed in Santa Marinella abot 10 min. by train from Civtiavecchia for 3 weeeks last summer. We went with our landlord and his wife to eat in Civitavecchia several times for some of the Best gelato and to a old Pizza place the are away from the port toward downtown. I wish I could remember the name. This a local favorite and our landlord told me people come from all around to sample the pizza naples style. It's a charming small town. stay away from the tourist shops and eateries near the port.6 euro round trip to Santa Marenella with great beaches and resturants overlooking the sea. Great sunsets. It's Italy just enjoy the veiw and a little lemoncello. I'm including the link to the place i stayed if you ema-mail them i,m sure they can give more info this area as they are life long residents and fantastic hosts.www.vrbo.com/20062

I forgot mention they do private tours to ruins and castles at very reasonable prices. They also were flexible and did custom tours or services at our request. Rosalba cooked a 10 course meal of fresh sefood and italian foods, for my family it was money well spent. it was the best food we at while in Italy.
