We will be visiting Italy in early June. Staying outside of Pienza and are planning at least one day trip to Florence, possibly two. We have a Sat. to Sat. stay. Is there any day(s) which is better in terms of hours, crowds, etc.? Also, how far in advance should I make reservations? Thanks!
Which day of the week is best to visit Uffizi and Accademia?

Hi L,

I don't think that it will matter which day you go.
Get to the Uffizi before 10:00, when the tour buses arrive, or after 4:00, when they have gone.
The walk from the Accademia to the Uffizi is downhill.
You'll need tickets to the Accademia so the availability will determine the day.
June in Florence is quite crowded, on weekends especially. Heed ira's advice and show up as early as possible. Second question on how soon to reserve can be found by goggling the museums.
I was always one to be there right when anything opened. Over the past few years, (Italy, Portugal, and Russia in Sept), that I changed and found EVERYONE else wanted to be there as well. Now I go in the PM and in some cases am all by myself in a room.
Thanks everyone, big help! I'm thinking mid week will be the best time to go.
Sounds like the best plan is to get to Florence early(we will probably drive to train station and park there).
Is a half day at Uffizi, half day at Accademia about right? We are traveling with our teenage sons. Thinking reserve one for early a.m. , break for lunch /shopping, reserve other for afternoon.
Thanks again everyone!
I would expect 1.5-3 hours at the Uffizi depending on your level of interest.
The Accademia is much smaller. Most people are in and out in about an hour.
For your day trip in June, I would reserve tickets ahead of time for both museums if you plan to do both.
If you reserve times then the day of the week is relatively unimportant. With teenage sons doing both museums could be hard work but they may be won over if you also take them to the Stibbert Museum which is on the outskirts of Florence which should not be a problem since you have a car. See - http://www.museostibbert.it/english/engid.html This photo gives you an idea of what your sons can see - http://www.museostibbert.it/images/english/caval.jpg
Laura, just as an alternative, we did a private tour recently in Florence. We went to Santa Croce to start - saw Michelangelo and Galileo's tombs and then to the Accademia to see the Prisoners and David. Took about 3 hours total and very much worth the money! (we were traveling with younmger kids than yours).
We were spoiled because we walked into the Accademia at 2pm on a Sunday with no line, but it was in November.
Nochblad, thank you for the info on Stibbert museum. It looks fascinating and armour and costumes are always hits with my boys! I really have not heard of this museum so this is much appreciated as an option.
Surfmom, do you mind sharing who led your private tour? We've found this is usually money well spent as we all seem to get more out of what we are seeing.
