We will be visiting Europe for 6 weeks and will stay in Prague, Heidelberg, Munich and Ljubljana before going to Croatia which includes Split. Interested in peoples opinions and recommendations for which castles to visit or not visit in these Cities. We do not know whether to visit all as we do not want to get to the stage of thinking "just another castle". We have previously been through Neushwanstein and Schonbrunn which we both enjoyed heaps. Prague and Heidelberg the castles are major major don't miss sights - Munich doesn't even have a major castle - does have a nice palace but not a castle to my knowledge. Don't know about Ljubljana.
I agree - Prague and Heidelberg are not to be missed. We just went to the castle in Ljubljana and were pretty disappointed. There wasn't too much to see and do, and the highlight, the virtual tour, was under repair. We actually liked the castle in Bled much more, if you're in that area.
Another option would be Linderhof, outside of Munich, or the castle in Salzburg.
