Where's the Best Pizza in Rome?
I keep reading about the pizza at Baffetto and Ivo in Trastevere. We are leaving for Rome Sept 22, (Thursday). We will only have 3 nights in Rome and would like to try pizza for dinner one of those nights. Are the two I mentioned considered the best, or are there others we should consider? We are staying near the Pantheon. Thanks for any ideas.

While I've sampled the pizzas at Baffeto in Trastevere and several other lesser places in Rome, and throughout Italy...in my opinion, "the best pizzas in Italy" are in NYC or Boston.(and I'm in L.A, and I concede)

In a Spanish guidebook I saw "La Sagrestia" recommended as the best pizza in Rome. I went there and I don't know if it is the best..but I cannot imagine anything better
By the way, it is at Via del Seminario, just besides the Pantheon.

Wait, Da Baffetto is in Trastevere? Am I drunk or are there a few of them? I could have sworn it was in the Campo/Navona area. Someone please correct me; I didn't make it there the last time I was in Rome.

Leely, Da Baffetto is indeed in the Piazza Navona area.
Dar Poeta is in Trastevere.
To confuse the issue further, Time Out says that Da Francesco (in the Corso/Trevi area) has the best pizza in Rome.

IMO, the best pizza in Rome can be found at Pizzaria Remo in Testaccio. Take the Metro to Piramide, walk west on via Marmorotta past Volpetti's and turn left. Ask anyone for directions (you're only a couple of blocks away). Its a local institution and the brick oven is right inside the front door. Prepare to wait for an outside table.

RichardJ,
Since you're staying by the Pantheon why not give Kenderina's pick on via del Seminario a try and let us all know?
Three days isn't enough time to do a systematic search unless you're really up for it.
Not pizza, but for tasty no-frills Roman grub, try da Olindo (in Trastevere, vicolo della Scala 8, ph. 06-58-188-35). Anything with guanciale--say, fava beans--will be heavenly.
Unless of course you don't like guanciale.
Enjoy Rome. There is so very much to savor!

p.s. Thanks, Eloise, for confirming where da Baffetto is. I think (?) there is now another one, near the Campo dei Fiori. When I was last in Rome I was with my pregnant sister; when she needed to eat she needed to eat *right then,* so anything with a long wait was out.
Next time...

Baffetto is on the Via del Governo Vecchio just off the Piazza Navona. There's a swank little wine bar right near it, but I can't for the life of me remember the name. Next door to the L'Insalata Ricca in Piazza Pasquino. (Boy am I hungry right now...)

That's its newer location.
As far as the pizz is concerned, it's good but no noticeably better than many other places I tried. Unlike the other poster, I thought that Italian pizza is far betterthan North American that is little more than a thick crust with puddle of tomato sause with as much cheese as possible thrown on. Italian pizza is far different, thin crust, thin layer.

My favorite way to get pizza in Rome was to go to any little hole in the wall place and choose a pizza from the glassed in display counters. Point at your choice, indicate how much you want, they cut it to size, heat it, and go. My favorite had potato and sausage. Out of this world!

Best slice I ever had in Rome was at a hole-in-the-wall (couldn't tell you the name, don't know) near the Pantheon. A white slice (no tomato sauce) with mozzarella and zucchini. Divine!
The wine bar I mentioned above is called Cul de Sac. A nice place to relax with a glass (or two...). They have good pate (sorry, I can't get an accent mark there).

Having ignored DaBuffetto in the past, last summer we finally stood in line and tried it. The pizza was so-so in my opinion. My partner hated his as it was totally blackened on the bottom and tasted burnt. In all honesty, I think the gimmick there is that they jam you in tight as can be, they throw the stuff at you, and they make you wait to get it, therefor you're supposed to think there's something wonderful about this place. What that wonderful thing is, I'm not sure -- but it definitely wasn't the pizza.
