Where would you go with 8- 9 days to drive around southern Norway?
We have a Nat Geo trip in Norway in mid July. It starts in Oslo and ends up in Bergen. This is our trip/itinerary
http://www.nationalgeographicexpedit...in-tour/detail
We plan on picking up a rental car in Bergen and winding our way through the countryside/villages/fjords eventually ending up in Oslo 8-9 days later.
We have read that driving in Norway is easy, and of course one has more time to enjoy, photograph and experience the country. The thought of driving above the Fjords sounds wonderful.
In another thread dyoll suggested
I would then drive the Hardangerfjord route from Bergen via Rosendal, staying at Baroniet Rosendal - http://baroniet.no/en/ Then E134 to Oslo with a side trip to Dalen staying at - http://www.dalenhotel.no/en/
But that thread was when I thought we would just be driving from Bergen to Oslo for 2-3 days. Now it looks like we may have 8-9 days.
We will have time in Oslo and Bergen so they do not need to be included, except that we will start from Bergen and end in Oslo.
Is 8-9 days too much? I had considered Denmark, but DH really wantrs to just do Norway, and I must admit, it looks like there is a lot to experience.
Are there certain places to "base" for a few days with day trips/easy walks/hikes in the area? Small towns, villages?
I have 2 guide books to start reading, but would love some suggestions from people who have visited Norway.

Hi Michael
I don't think we would drive north as far as Trondheim, we have 2 nights there with Nat Geo.
We are also at Geiranger one night so probably wouldn't even go that far north of Bergen
Maybe no further north than Sognefjord ?

Norway is very easy to drive around. We were there in August last year. We drove from Bergen to Balestrand and stayed there. Absolutely gorgeous. Then we drove along the fjord over towards Luster and stayed at a fabulous B&B called Nes Gard. The drive was beautiful and the views from Nes Gard were unbelievable. If you stay there get the half board they have a great dinner and there are no other restaurants nearby. We took a day trip to a glacier from there which was also great ( you can hike on the glacier if you have the time, we just hiked over to it which was very easy). There is a large waterfall across from Nes Gard that you can drive over to ( on a very narrow road) and hike up to. There are a few Stave churches in the area too. Norway has beauty everywhere. We then took the snow road over to Flam. It was fantastic! We ended up taking the ferry from Flam( there had been a fire in the tunnel and it was closed ) but to be honest we saw much more driving than we did on the ferry. We then went over to the Hardanger fjord for a few days but you could head toward Oslo instead. It is supposed to be a beautiful drive. Have a great trip!

I suggest visiting Norwegian Riviera – Sørlandet. It is great in summer – by the way, when are you going to Norway?
Sirdal – the Southern gateway to Fjord Norway. Arendal is fantastic, nearby Merdø is really fairy-tailish. Flekkefjord is located midway between Kristiansand and Stavanger, with only 1.5 hours’ drive to each of the cities. Flekkefjord, of course. Lindeness with its sea and mountains contrasts is great. The valley of Setesdal. Mineral Park in Evje.

We loved Nes Gard. Just make sure to have dinner there as there is really no where else to go for dinner! The food was very good for both breakfast and dinner. We met people from all over at dinner. It was quite fun. There are some great hikes to glaciers not far from there.

We drove down to that village. The hotel looked very nice. The day we were there the ferry was not working so we couldn't take it over to the Stave church. We ended up driving around the fjord to the waterfall. A very narrow road but worth the trip. You can hike up to the waterfall. Make sure you do the walk to the glacier near there. We also drove past it and up to the dam. You can drive up the road ( a bit hair raising) and then walk up to the top. Very beautiful and quite interesting. Be sure to dress warm, we were there in August and it was quite cold! Needed a hat and gloves. We loved Norway!
