Where would you go between Chamonix and the Bernese Oberland?

Hi folks,

My Swiss rail journey will begin from Chamonix after a 2-week road trip through France and will look something like this:

Chamonix to Zermatt (2 nights)
Zermatt to Murren (3 nights)
Murren to Wengen (3 nights)
Wengen to Lausanne (2 nights)

I've booked all my hotels except in Zermatt because I've been told not to bother going unless the weather forecast is favourable (which I won't know until closer to the date).

So if Zermatt turns out to be a no-go, where would you suggest I spend those two nights? I'm considering Bern or Luzern but even those destinations will take half a day to get to. Are there good places to go between Chamonix and Murren?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated ! Thanks a lot
